Hello,

As the title says, i've just installed W7 for the first time and have a few questions.

Now i'm all set up (drivers and software) should i create a new account and use that as admin and change the account i installed with to a normal user account?

Also, Where do you all leave the slider for UAC?

Anything else that is considered essential for safety after installation?

Many thanks in advance.

Dave

I am also interested in this question.

Currently my user account is an admin account. I am am regularly hearing that this is risky, and you should keep the admin account separate. Is this still the case? could someone explain why?

I am planning on putting together a computer for my dad in the next few weeks. I am guessing the advice on what is safe for me, may differ from what would be safe for someone like my dad.

Well,

In an enterprise enviroment i'd reccomend you have a seperate admin account but on a home pc? that all depends on your knowledge....

I run with UAC off as its annoying (although much better then vista i may add!) and my account is a full admin account, because i have sufficient AV and common sense when surfing the net.

Aslong as you have some kind of system restore point/image backup this would solve the majority of any issues you would face.

Although id highly reccomend a standard user account for somebody who doesnt know a lot about computers to stop them installing anything dodgy.

Remember you can always run as a standard user and shift+rclick and run as and then type in admin credentials if you wish.

I think i fall somewhere inbetween noob and really knowing what i'm doing so i'll keep the UAC on :)

As for making an Image could you recommend some software for this, free or otherwise, please?

Yes.

Leave it alone.

Windows can make a backup image. Acronis True Image and Macrium Reflect are used a lot too.
