Hi guys,

British Gas, I have a service plan with them, have just condemned my 5/6 year old Bosch washing machine... after pretty much replacing all of its internals, they've finally hit a wall with regards to what's causing it malfunction and it is being written off.

So after I see what BG are going to offer in the way of compo, I'll be in the washing machine market :D

I'm a bit reluctant to go with Bosch again if I'm honest - this condemned one's been a bit of a pig if I'm honest, it's had several engineer visits. I reckon a budget of £500, max. 9kg+ load and a solid energy rating.

So, any model/brand recommendations immediately spring to mind? Samsung stuff looks pretty good for the £££.

Thanks!

We've got a cheap hoover and it's been going for 3 years and then it was second hand. But we are a house of 2 and don't need anything fancy.

Not keen on spending loads for stuff like this myself. Most on here would say our washer is terrible.

There are threads for washing machines the recommendation is for Miele or LG. Also ditch the service plan they cost more than the price of a replacement machine over the long run

I have a Gorenje washing machine (Slovenian manufacturer) that's over 10 years old now and hasn't missed a beat. Would replace it with something with a bigger drum if it died, but so far it's shown absolutely no signs of giving up.

Makes no difference - they are all shoddily built, cheaply constructed junk from China - with a well-known-name badge stuck on the front.

My new Hotpoint fell to pieces within two years. Opened it up to see cheap folded sheet-metal mountings and plastic screws, where once there would have been proper metal castings held together with proper bolts and locking nuts. Ended up replacing a ton of stuff inside it with far better parts I cobbled together myself. It's been fine for an extra 5 years now.

Seriously, just go for something basic and don't waste your money. Brand name is meaningless as they are all dropping out of the same factories. Be ready to take it to the tip within 5 years, then stump up for another one. The days of "built to last" are long gone, I'm afraid.

Rant off. :D

Had a Hotpoint one for 8 years till the drum bearings finally went. Replaced it with 9kg Hotpoint Gentlepower. Costs 0.15 pence per hour according to the Energy Thief meter.
Gets used for 45 minutes every week day. It’s quiet and things come out smelling fresh. So happy days £489 from Curry’s.

Saw the price of miele. You'd have to go through several cheap ones before you even got to the break even of a miele.

Warranty isn't even that long if I recall?

Just looked. I'd have to get through 5 of our washing machine to get to a break even on a 9kg miele!

best washing machine I ever owned was a Panasonic one, at the time my brother in law worked for an electrical retailer he told us the machines that had the lowest defect rate they sold was panasonic machines. ours lasted about 9 years before it gave up mainly due the hardwater area we live in.

Bosch here, not missed a beat for ten years. Now possibly needing some attention but we would buy another.

We use it almost daily too.

We've got an 8 year old basic Miele washing machine here going strong. Only problem we've had so far is when one of the wife's underwires escaped the bra and shredded the door seal.

In the past we've had a Hotpoint and Hoover and both were junk that lasted only a couple of years.

I managed to get an LG F4V710WTSE for £414 from Marks Electrical, + shipping. Topcashback too

The Mrs still loves her Samsung WW90T554DAN,

We got ours from AO.COM for £419
It's A rated, 9Kg, Wifi Enabled (Good integration with SmartThings), Steam Wash, Eco Bubble, Direct Drive motor, Add Wash (the primary feature the Mrs wanted) and has programmable start/end timer (good if using off peak elec tariffs), 5 year main warranty and 20 years years on the motor.

They do a 10.5kg version too..

It seems well engineered, it has a good automated drum balance (no washing in, balances the assembly) and has self cleaning etc (uses Steam as well for that).
