I’m going to buy a new watch this week.

I was going to get the “cheap (I know £1k isn’t cheap, please don’t start!) and cheerful” Seamaster quartz in black, the cheapest I can find it for is £940 for the large faced version. A good deal I thought.

I would love a Breitling Navitimer, but at £3k for a decent used metal strapped version it’s a little out of reach at the moment. Now the Super Ocean has caught by eye as used they fall almost into my budget of around £1k, something like this- LINK!

  • What do you think of the two options and what one would you go for?
  • Is there any other pieces I should be look at around that budget?
  • I’m not against buying used, where is the best place to look for used watches?

Thanks for all your help you knowledgeable people!

Personally with that budget I would go lightly used through the watch forums - you will get a lot more watch for your money.

There was a mid size seamaster quartz on tz-uk.com this morning for £495 to give you an idea. You open up a whole load of options (including auto seamasters).

Personally I am not a Breitling fan but to each their own.

Thanks for the reply. Is tz-uk.com members market only available to members as I can't find it. Any other sites to look at for used?

Thanks again!

People still wear watchs? Its rather pointless now a days unless your out jogging just look at your phone.

I think I would look a bit stupid if I need to check the time when I was with a client and had to pull my phone out of my pocket. It would look like I was checking for text/missed calls. I could get a £20 watch but again, not the best look.

oops, sorry forget about that - 20 posts needed i think to see it (you can get there in no time) and I think perhaps 50 to post there - may be wrong but I know it's not more than that (& as long as you can PM you can still reach the sellers)

Another one in the UK is:

http://www.thewatchforum.co.uk/index.php

Haven't used that myself but I know it is established.

& another but not very UK:

You can also try watch auctions like fellows:

Go for a used Auto Seamaster for about £8-900

something like a Breitling Colt Auto should be in your price range used

Or stretch the budget to about £1300 and you can pick up a very nice used Planet Ocean

Would you echo the places listed about to look out for them or have you got other suggestions?

maybe people buy watches because they like watches

and as has been mention you are going to look a bit daft taking a phone out in a business environment every time you want to check the time

Am I right in thinking you own an Omega PO? What's it offer over the auto Seamaster? I do really like the PO, it's a very popular watch amongst "collectors" isn't it? Much more of a classic than the Seamaster? I assume if I get a used version for £1300 it will hold its vaule very well?

All the Breitling Colt's on ebay at least look very tatty, that put me off both new and used if they're not going to last.

If you by a used auto Seamaster or Planet Ocean it should always be worth every penny you paid for it

I agree that some Breitlings don't seem to wear well

At that money I would definitely go for the Planet Ocean

You can always add a bit more for ever and a day and find something different

it's a slippery slope though you will end up always wanting something different/better/more expensive

I tend to rotate mine every 2-3 years

Stuff I buy used I tend to break even on or even make a profit, this is obviously harder if you buy new

That's always the danger, a little more then a little more. I've just see a used Rolex Sub' for £2300 and had those exact words going through my head. A friend of mine had a quartz Seamster so I'd rather not get the same. I'd be over the moon if I could get the used Omega PO (they look stunning!) keep it for 3 years and not loose that much on it.

Just out of interest where would you be looking for used?

I also went to test drive a Cayman last weekend, only a 2.7 though not the "s" that you have. Was very nice but I couldn't live with it everyday, I do to many long trips! Very nice car though, congrats.

Thanks for all your help!

I have a PO and I love it. Very smart and seems to suit all occasions. It's a fairly dressy sports watch I'd say. Bought it from new for £1,650 so you should be able to get a very good example for £1,500 s/h. I can see me keeping it for a long time.

Orcish-Horde - do you often use your phone to tell the time when you are swimming in the sea?

I finally found somewhere local that stocked Omega watches at the weekend as I've been hankering after a Seamaster for ages, I now want a PO.

Problem is I've got quite thin/small wrists so worried as it's a reasonably large watch it'll look stupid and I'll have to settle for either a mid or full size normal seamaster :(

Didn't bother going in to try one on as I'll only wanted to have bought it :p

I even rather liked the Orange bezel model.

I think RRP is about £2100 now so more like £1800 in reality

having said that £1300-1400 should get a good used one

Spamalot, if you were after a PO would you want the 42 or 45mm and strap or bracelet ?
