Hi all

I was wondering if someone could help me out?

I've currently got a water cooled rig that I've had running for years consisting of the following:

Eheim 1250 pump
Dual core rad
Swiftech Storm waterblock
I think the tubing is 1/2 inch tubing?! (Its been a while since I built it and have only ever had to drain and refill it every year or so...)

This setup has been brilliant and is currently cooling an AMD Opteron 165 @ 3GHz. However, my brother has just upgraded his machine and given me his old Mobo, RAM, CPU and graphics card...

So I now need a AM2 socket waterblock and preferably a waterblock for the ATi 4870 GPU.

So what do you guys recommend? I'll be happy to go for an air cooler for the GPU if the GPU waterblocks are a ridiculous price...

So, talk to me. :)

Firstly you need to check what PCB is on the 4870....then find stock of blocks, which may not be so easy for a 3 gen old card, not impossible however, especially if you have MM access :)

I would say something like the EK LTX would be a non-expensive upgrade from the Storm.

Do you have a budget in mind? And presume you'll be keeping the res, pump & rad from your current build?

I've just looked at the card but couldn't see anything obvious... How do I tell?

Budget wise I'll pay around £40-50 for the CPU block and probably around the same for the GPU block. (Although from the sound of things if its the members market route it may be cheaper?!)

Yup, i'd like to keep everything else the same. Mainly because it works so well already. I didn't write it above but I have a dual bay res already too. :)

Should be fine, I'd expect a 2nd hand 4870 block to run no more then £30 anyhow.

To find out about full cover blocks, find the make and model of your card here: http://www.coolingconfigurator.com/

If you can't find full cover blocks, you may have to resort to core only blocks and some heatsinks for the vram and vrm areas :)

£40-50 on a CPU block you can pretty much take your pick of the best blocks on the market, supremacy and Raystom :)

Cheers dude. I'm going for the Supremacy for the CPU. (Covers an eventual upgrade to AM3 when my brother next upgrades. :D ) And i'm going to stick with an upgraded air cooler for the GPU.

But thanks for the help! Looking forward to the waterblock turning up now... :)
