Hey guys,

So today I was at our local store picking up some wine, when I came across this!

So, I noticed the price was pretty cheap at $15, so I wasn't that keen, however, then I noticed there was one in a box like set, for the exact same price...with a Glencairn glass included for free!! I'd been wanting to get a Glencairn for ages, so for $15 I was more than happy to part with the cash.

Having never heard of this before, I got to the internet to try and find some information out, and to be honest, information regarding it is on the slim side. Apparently there is a bit of controversy surrounding it, but aside from that, I can't find much more out.

I tasted a glass tonight, and actually, I was crazy surprised. It's actually pretty good. There is almost no lingering aftertaste which is a shame, but even for twice the price, it would be a great tipple!

So, does anyone now anything about this whiskey at all?

Seems the Lismore brand and it's parent company was taken over by J&G Grant who also own Glenfarclas. I've never heard of it and reading the few comments about it online I wouldn't be going out of my way to drink it! I guess coming from an undefined distillery with no age statement it could well change a fair bit from bottling to bottling. Getting a glencairn glass with it is a nice addition though.

Strange. Lismore is an island in the Hebrides yet the whisky is claiming to be a Speyside. I suspect it's cheap muck from some distillery, and then going by what nydryl has said, rebottled in Glasgow and sent off for export.

From what I can find online, the above descriptions seem about right.

Looks like it's leftovers from some generic distillery, bottled and shipped off to foreign parts. I think it's reasonably safe to say that, if they can throw in a Glencairn and sell it at a profit for $15, my expectations would be low.

Having said that, you say you enjoyed it so it's a bargain for you :)

Had some nice surprises from cheap single malt. We get quite a few own brand supermarket offerings in the UK and I've had a few that have been quite decent.

Having said that - yep - it's an un-identified Speyside single malt. Probably nothing special but that doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with it.

The Sainsbury's own brand Irish whiskey was crowned best Irish Whiskey by the Whisky Bible which is quite telling (both that Irish whiskey is crap, and that supermarkets can get some good things in - choose whichever of those conclusions you wish. I'll take the former ;)).

For $15 and a glass, it's a bargain I suppose (though no idea the normal price of a bottle of whisky in your State). If it's horrible, just treat it like a Bells and throw some ginger beer/ale in there to make it drinkable.

Nothing wrong with Bells. :(
