(Hope this is correct forum)

I have finally installed Windows 7 on my desktop PC, having previously been using XP.

Since doing this, I have experienced performance problems. When copying a file from my laptop (windows 7) to the PC, the transfer hangs without much progress. With torrents being saved on my PC but the program run on my laptop, the speed is very slow and I see the message "drive overloaded".

I am not certain if this is a network or hard drive issue, although I ran a scan on the PC and the speed seemed ok.

The install was a bit untidy, on a new partition, leaving XP etc.

I would appreciate any advice :>

edit: copying file from PC to laptop seemed ok but the reverse hanged :s

What HDD is installed on the PC?

If it is an IDE drive, or an old SATA mechanical drive, the write performance could be slower than your network speed, and the drive may be getting too old or dying.

I would suggest buying a new drive, preferably an SSD, and install a clean version of 7 on it. That way, if you still need access to XP, it will still be on the old drive (just switch the boot drives in the BIOS).

If it is a fairly new drive, make sure that when you installed 7, you installed all the latest chipset drivers for the motherboard. Intel chipsets require the chipset drivers to fully initialise the HDD controller, and some will also have Rapid Storage drivers to boost HDD performance. Others like AMD and VIA may require the same.

The HDD is sata, "Hitachi HDT721032SLA360 ATA Device". It had been on IDE mode but I have since changed it. This had no effect on the problem.

I am reluctant to change the drive as it was fine under XP. I noticed that copying a file to the PC from my laptop works fine when I start the transfer from the PC.

So it is just happening when I send it using the laptop :s
