Got my Netgear 834n today from ocuk, thanks.

I got it to replace my old 834 router connected to a linksys wireless box (b speed only).

I have the occasional signal drop outs on the old setup and a couple of dead spots in the house but i thought that was due to the old 4 year old technology. So i finally get a brand new all in one big range jobbie.

Linked it all up today and the wireless performance is terrible, hardly even works in the lounge now. Really gutted as i use wireless all the time.

I have tried the different modes: b & g, 170mbs and 270mbs but it is the same. Soon as i go downstairs my signal just drops to poor!

Anything i can do apart from go back to the old system?

Thanks

That's sytrange my DG834N is perfect and has never given me any bother. What version of firmware is it running? If it isn't running 1.01.06 firmware upgrade it to that and see if that sorts it out, just don't flash it via wireless.

What do you suggest? There are other wireless networks being picked up from the neighbours.

Channels 1 6 or 11 are the recommended channels, the 3 most isolated in terms of signal from the others. Remember that other household items like DECT Phones can cause signal problems.

Can also be a case of just cycling through the spectrum until you get a good signal.

You'd be better off getting an external antenna for your access point to boost the signal. Assuming your AP has that capability. Something like 5dBi gain would do nicely.

Or get an access point that'll run either OpenWRT or DD-WRT, then you can increase the transmission power.
