i currently have a Sitecom 54G adapter, but linking to a competitor is a dumb idea...

i use my PS3 in my bed room which is 3 rooms away and i get 50% signal which can be annoying as i sometimes either lose connection to a online game or "lag".

The dont care USB adaptor feature, it was my sister's before she went away around 3 years ago.

I also Media share and the max speed is 2 MB/s. i'm planning to create a file server so i would like it to be faster.

Things i want improving:
Increased signal strength
Increased LAN speed transfer

could the wireless reciever on my laptop and PS3 bottlecap the LAN transfer speed?

PS3 wireless info: Wireless Capabilities Bluetooth 2.0, IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g, Wi-Fi

Also wiring is not avalible

Would an N series wireless router worth it?

My budget is around £30-£50 maybe more

Also i dont mind where's its sold or used. Ebay will do fine except from hong kong and preferabley sold in the UK

You can in fact, get gigabit/n routers if you push 50-60, if you can live with megabit/g then a wrt54gl flashed with tomato would give you options most routers wont for the lowest expenditure. That begin said, there are N/gigabit routers that accept dd-wrt which again, are ~50-60 quid.

G, with encryption etc, maxed at 30Mb, typically closer to 25Mb (~2-2.5MB/s) so if you're question was the bottleneck to the ps3, then yes, it's the wireless and N. N typically has a shorter range than g, so a repeater would probably sort your signal issue (again wrt54gl flashed with tomato) but you'd still be on g and stuck with 2MB/s.

If you're shifting large files ethernet is really the best way to go, if you can get a cable to the device.

Try the Advent Ethernet Adaptor - the thing that uses your houses' mains as ethernet cables. They plug right into the sockets on your wall so as long as you have one near your PS3 and your router you CAN have cabling :)
