I need some help setting up a wireless network for my parents, a subject on which i have little knowledge.

My dad has just bought a new laptop and wants to set up a wireless network in his house. He already has a desktop pc connected to the internet via BT Broadband. He wants to be able to connect wirelessly to the internet, but not be automatically connected the whole time. He went to PC and after asking the staff what he needed, he was sold a D-Link DSL-G624M Wireless 108g MIMO ASDL2/2+ Router. He has tried to set up the network following the instructions given with the router, but has had no joy.

Im not familiar with setting up a network, so i was wondering if anyone could tell me how to go about doing so for the above situation. Is the router he bought going to do the job, or does he need to change this for something else? As far as i can tell from what he has told me, he has been able to connect to the internet on the desktop pc from the router, but not via wireless on the laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Trying to diagnose a fault remotely, like this, is hopeless due to the number of variables involved e.g. other wireless networks in the area, conflicts between system/drivers etc.

You're only real option is to go round and setup the wireless yourself.

Assuming that he's trying to setup the laptop at a resonable distance from the router, ie within range of it....

A quick shufty on the forums out there about this router gave the first main recommendation....upgrade it's firmware straight away. So someone needs to download this for starters : ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dsl_routers_modems/dsl-g624m/dsl-g624m.uk.b02t09.20051212.zip

Here's how you/dad can install it : http://www.dlink.co.uk/?go=jN7uAYLx...xbR9MtefdZoSwBs+97CMInNBOCfgfepDOu0GGvHLdfZE=

There's many more answers provided on that site which will help later on so I'd bookmark it if I were you. The user manual can be downloaded here as well :
ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dsl_routers_modems/dsl-g624m/dsl-g624m_manual.pdf

Now in doing the firmware upgrade the router's settings should be back at it's default, ie pre dad ;)
So now try connecting through the PC and the laptop. If they both seem fine then I'd recommend reading the part in the manual regarding 'securing your network'. If the laptop's still not connecting then it's time to look at it's wireless network settings. Resetting them to their default should be the first thing to do. Also check that the laptop's WiFi card, be it inbuilt or of the slot variety (pcmcia/cardbus) is actually compatible with the router!
