My old 2700k is finally getting a bit long in the tooth and I shall be retiring it just distributed rendering work as and when I need it and the old Q6600 will be sold. I already have (more) hard drives etc and dual 1080p monitors.

I have this list thus far:

*** No competitor links please ***

I dropped down from 64GB of RAM to 32GB for the moment, not from a lack of money, but just wondering how necessary it is :)

I mostly need this for work, 3d rendering, 3d modelling environments and archvis stuff in 3ds Max/Maya, Photoshop and hopefully if I ever pull my finger out, Zbrush.

However, I do play games and I am itching to play Elite: Dangerous :)

I can't make my mind up on cases, either the Temjin or the Obsidian 700D.

I doubt I will be overclocking, so I am not entirely sold on a 'proper' watercooling solution.

I'd like to get ordering this ASAP, so if you see anything amiss, please let me know :)

Thanks

Apologies for the competitor links - a couple of things on it werent available at OCUK :/

Anywho here we go:::

1 x EVGA Superclocked Titan Black
1 x Intel 4930K 3.4Hz (Ivybridge- E)
1 x Asus P9X79 WS Intel X79
1 x Patriot Venom Red 32GB (4 x 8GB)
1 x NZXT Kraken X60
1 x Corsair RM Series 850 '80+ Gold'
1 x Phanteks Enthoo Pro Mid Tower
2 x Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200RPM

Price is around £2300 right now.

Slightly tempted by the corsair obsidian 650D case as well. I ditched the 64 GB I was considering, although I am still somewhat tempted.
Going to order today, but if it looks pants, let me know :)

It might be worthwhile waiting until the new 8-core is out (5960x). I will be upgrading my main workstation and rendernodes to this. The price of 4930k will drop as well once it is out.

Also, no SSD? Think about using an SSD for project files - I do, it speeds up 3ds max/cray rendering hugely because assets can be loaded and written so much more quickly. Same for PSDs and max files.

650D is solid. I use it for all of my machines.

Titan if you can afford it or 780 or even a 4GB 770 will be good for most games. Depends on resolution. Definitely go for 4GB or 6GB VRAM.

I just posted in another post that I completely forgot about render nodes.
I put together 4 nodes together, using 4790Ks, 8GB RAM and 120GB SSD + 500GB Caviar Green for £545.

My current PC has a 240GB Samsung SSD that I would use :)

I could afford 4 of these for the same prices as my proposed new workstation. I have never contemplated nodes before and wonder when the number of them starts to make a difference?

Right away but it's not 1:1.

For instance if you add another machine of the same render speed, you might see a 60% speed boost or so. Something like that. It won't halve your rendertimes to double up on power, in other words. But it will be decent. It depends on how fast your network is too.

Network hasn't been built yet - I just work at home and trying to get into freelance.
I have gigabit switches somewhere laying around as I have given up on wireless and would like to get a homeserver from HP or something so I could have a centralised place to store all of my textures rather than grab them constantly from my main computer.

I am now thinking I'll get the Titan and 3 nodes - by the time the prices of the 5960 etc become slightly more attainable (for me) I'll still be able to use the titan and upgrade everything around it.

Do you want to PM me/TRUST message me? I'd be interested in seeing your work, if you're doing freelance arch-viz. I use freelancers often.
