I am planing on building this spec:

  • Asus P9X79 DELUXE Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard
    £264.98

  • Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor
    £215.99

  • Corsair Obsidian 650D Gaming Midi Tower
    £145.99

  • Kingston HyperX Genesis 8GB (4x2GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit
    £129.95

  • Corsair HX 750W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply
    £119.99

  • Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache
    £119.99

  • OCZ Agility 3 120GB 2.5" SATA-3 Solid State Hard Drive
    £94.99

  • Corsair Hydro H100 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler
    £76.99

  • Sony Optiarc AD-7280S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter

I will be taking my current 6950 and putting it in this build (will be upgrading to a 680 in the future). Its mainly for gaming, surfing the net watching HD content and some word processing.
I'm going for the X79 route as there will be possibility of an upgrade (Ivybridge-E) in the future. But other than that would I gain any performance going down the Z77 + 3770K route instead?

Also anyone know where I can find 120mm PWM led or blue coloured fans for the h100 and case? I would rather let the MB control the fans speeds as the board does have loads of 4-pin PWM fan headers.

For the uses that you outlined, I feel a Z77+IB CPU will be a better/cheaper combination.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £179.99
1 x Corsair Obsidian 650D Gaming Midi Tower - Black £145.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £139.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST3000DM001) £119.99
1 x XFX 850W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Silver' Power Supply £109.99
1 x Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT128M4SSD2) £94.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H100 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366/LGA2011/AM2/AM3) (CWCH100) £76.99
1 x Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CML8GX3M2A1600C9) £39.95
1 x LG GH22NS90 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £18.98
Total : £943.37 (includes shipping : £13.75).

Well if you cant find any at OCUK, then mentioning competitors is against the FAQ's, what colour of LED fans are you looking for?

I agree with stulid... go ivy bridge.

IB-E likely won't be a worthwhile upgrade for you if going SB-E... so in my opinion it would be better to go for IB and keep it til you see what Haswell has to offer (which will use a different pin-out).

Im looking for 120mm blue/white led pwm fans, if not led then fans with blue fins?

Thanks for the suggestion; I will keep that in mind before purchasing.

Also thanks for the for configuring a build stulid, but I do want this build to be as fast as possible and I don't mind cost too much. However I do not want to spend more than £1,300. Later I will be adding another OCZ agility 3 to run in raid0.

It is going to be fast, its simple to overclock also with the unlocked multiplier of a K CPU.

2500K (a little slower than a 3570K) vs 3820 - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/523?vs=288

Also the Crucial M4 are faster than the OCZ agility's.

Just a couple of comments:

By your intended use in the first post, you won't see any benefit from the 3770K... it's only real advantage over the 3570K is hyperthreading... so you'll only benefit from the 3770 in video encoding and rendering.

Also... the Samsung green memory is less than half the price and will reach the same speeds as the kingston in that motherboard.

Well I'm also going for aesthetics and I do like the matching blue heat spreaders to the MB heat sinks. Also I read a review on the Kingston ram on Harwareheven and they got it running with these timings: 2400MHz @ 10-11-10-27-2T. But the price for the Samsung ram is very good!

Fans can be found here.

Also, would go with the Psu, Stulid recommended. More power and cheaper.

I can't find any 120mm blue/white led PWM fans. The Silverstone SST-SUSCOOL121 is a new PWM fan with blue fins! but I can't find any reviews on it; would these be suitable for a H100? If not I may just settle for the Akasa AK-FN058 Apache Black Super Silent fans.

Fair enough - you could always get a 3rd party heatspreader though, if you felt like it.

These Samsung sticks run at a command rate of 1T... which will give a nice little improvement over those Kingstons.

Okay purchased all parts! The system is up and running, in the end I got x2 M4 64GB's and set them up in Raid 0 on intel controller; after firmware update the read speeds are 1000Mbps+!!. Write speeds are fairly quick to hitting 220Mbps.
Also managed to find x2 120mm PWM blue Led fans elsewhere which look great!

However I need some advise:
- Are there any guides to over-clocking 3770K on Z77?

- I managed to get the Samsung 30nm ram stable at 2200Mhz, 11-11-11-28-1T, 1.45 volts. However when I change the clocks to 2400Mhz the computer does not boot. Just keeps restarting itself, the bios does not even come up! I just turn it off hit the "mem ok" button on the board then it automatically sets default clocks and i can then get back into the bios. (I have tried upping the voltage to 1.57, but still no go).

- I am coming from an asus P5e board which came with a supreme fx II sound card which sounded great with games and especially music. I thought the asus P8Z77-V Deluxe on-board sound card would be good if not better considering the age of the supreme fx II (around 4 years old) but it isn't. Even after enabling DTS UltraPC II and playing with the settings it still sounds no where near as good as the supreme fx II.
After searching online I found that asus do a "Supremefx x-fi" sound card which is an upgrade to the fx II. Would this be compatible with my board?

-Finally I thought I had researched the 650d enough, apparently not......right now my system is near silent, it would be completely silent if it were not for the 200mm front intake fan/fan grill design. After searching for this issue specifically I found i'm not the only one complaining about this. It seems the only way to kill the buzzing sound is the cut out the grill with a dremel tool. I don't have one of these and I'm not too keen on cutting my case, ive read that the cooler master megaflow fans push more air at lower db than most 200mm fans including the corsair stock fan. I would like to know will this make a noticeable difference?, are there any other options because the pc on my desk right next to me and all I can hear is that fan.
