New XBox Series X Owner - Setup tips?

It's been ages since I've played, never mind owned a console. I do most of my gaming on PC, my son has an Xbox One but I've never really been anywhere near it so I'm well out of the loop when it comes to gaming console hardware.

Anyway, I've bought an Xbox Series X which should be delivered here this morning within the next hour. It will be hooked up to my 55" LG C1 OLED TV. Are there any n00b things/tips/tricks/hints I should be aware of when plugging it all in for the first time? I mean settings to tweak perhaps, that sort of thing? It's also coming with 3 months of 'Game Pass Ultimate' although I'm not entirely sure what that consists of compared to a 'Games Pass' account.

Cheers :)

Nah just follow onscreen instructions then maybe mess about with the tiles on home screen to suit a style you like.

They are pretty straight forward

You need to turn on the advanced HDMI setting on the TV. Can’t remember exactly what it’s called on LG, but it’s in the first setting menu for display

Think it might be HDMI Deep Colour

Mine was auto enabled on my CX

Oh really? I had to enable on my CX when I got it, and my B8 before that - spent too long trying to figure out a simple setting

It caught me out on a Samsung monitor too. It was only doing 4K30 over USB C. Such a weird setting

CX here as well, all the hdmi deep colour settings were either enabled already or auto enabled when it detected device.

As for settings on xbox.

In video settings you want 120hz, leave most of the other stuff on the default settings.

Also the other setting to think about is instant on or energy save mode. The console is so fast to boot up I personally choose energy save mode, in this mode it still auto updates games when console is off (most of the time)

Thanks for the replies, folks. So I ran through the setup, downloaded the Xbox App and the TV picked up the console and auto adjusted itself and its settings which was great.

I then got to the part where it asks you about subscriptions - I have a code which came with the console which gives me 3 months Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for free for that period. I've entered the code which is correct and clicked 'Next', added a payment card for the recurring payment details and it accepted that and clicked 'Next' and it then goes to a screen where it shows 'Here is what you get' I click 'Confirm' and all that happens is it sits and looks like it is trying to do something but never does, showing the three dots in the middle of the screen scrolling along. I've left it like that for an hour and its still the same. Definitely connected to the network so it isn't that.

Any ideas? Have tried restarting the console and going through the process again but it does the same and appears to get stuck :(

Can’t you skip that part and maybe try redeeming that code via a different device / web browser with your Microsoft account.

Ta, tried that but it still wasn't working. I gave up with the code that came with the console and just clicked on the '3 months for £1' offer on the main Games Pass screen and it went through, verified my bank details and worked fine. Strange.

Is it just a 3 month ultimate code. Try redeeming it on the "redeem a code page" on a web browser. Although now you have signed up Im not sure how it works.

Just have to remember, after you months of ultimate ends you may have recurring billing on, in which case you will be charged £10.99 monthly.

Good idea to check you subscription in your Microsoft account. I turn recurring billing off myself.

Hi, yes - its a 3 month ultimate code. Cheers for the heads-up on recurring payments. I take it you can dip in and out as you wish, i.e. take a break from paying it for a couple of months then sign up again or do they limit how much you could potentially do that?

Yeah, best to turn it off as then you can let it expire and find cheaper deals on ultimate, can even do that gold conversion trick mentioned about on here (which is the best and cheapest method to get ultimate)

Basically redeem "up to" 3 years of gold then sign back up to ultimate for £10.99 and that converts all your gold sub into ultimate.

I recently did this and now have ultimate till June 2025.

If you do this you must let your current ultimate sub expire first.

Perfect, many thanks for that - sounds like the best way forward!
