So, I've booked 5 nights in New York in July next year. I'm staying fairly centrally near Times Square. I currently only have one thing I am definitely going to want to do and that is a baseball game. I've checked the schedule and annoyingly the Yankees are playing away, so it will be the Mets for the second time rather than a first visit to Yankee Stadium, planning on doing this on the Sunday, which gives me Saturday, Monday and Tuesday as full days and then Wednesday as the leaving day but don't have to be at the airport until about 5pm.

I plan to watch the Food Wars (Tours) NY videos for some ideas on food places, but am open to other suggestions. I am not a high class person, so am not looking for Michelin or even close, just good honest burgers, pizzas etc.

Then I just need to decide whether to plan other events (New York Pass type things) or just wing it each day.

Coney Island on the train
Botanical Gardens , Bronx.

Just a few things I did each day, I also took the train out of NYC, and visited Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown, surprising how close things are and what you can fit in a day.

Not sure what any of these things would be like at this time of year though.

Places to eat, not sure, can't remember the names, I let my brother pick who knew the good places as he lived there.

Have alook at Walk with Tim videos on YouTube he visited New York recently and gave his opinion on what to go and see.

A couple of less-obvious suggestions:

The High Line - a former disused elevated railway which has been transformed into a walkway and park. It runs from the Meatpacking District, through Chelsea and up to Hudson Yards and passes adjacent to Chelsea market too.

From the top of the High Line, the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier and museum is only around 10-15mins stroll. The onboard Space Shuttle Pavilion houses the Space Shuttle Enterprise and the USS Growler nuclear sub is berthed adjacent. You can go onboard the Growler too and see the inner workings.

Recommend checking the gig/events schedules too. So many options for music, no matter what you are into.

Hi all, sorry for the lack of responses, run up to Christmas has taken priority over something 6 months away. I do appreciate the responses and will have a proper look through, most likely in the new year.

I did both of these and they were definitely a highlight.

For food, there is a lot of hype around New York food and quite a lot of it isn’t that good I’ve found. However I really like the cookies from Levain Bakery and tacos from Los Tacos No1 (very close to Time Square).

Another vote for High Line and Intrepid.

Regarding food, once you've got an idea of the areas you're going to visit, take some time to find a range of restaurants in those places and star them on Google Maps. You don't want to miss out on sightseeing because you were stood in a queue for <insert food here>. Better to have some backups than grabbing something from CVS.

Intrepid is so cool, but my brother did not enter the submarine and I fully understand as it is very claustrophobic in there!

We did both of these whilst we were there last year. As @eurokage suggested - is compact in the Sub, but was interesting to see and throughout both the boat and sub were ex-serviceman who had served on them so gave some great insight and more then happy to answer questions and give their experience.

For food, and high line combined definitely go into Chelsea Market - its a giant food hall. Had some incredible noodles in there which were made fresh and so much flavour! High Line passes right by it!

We used the "City Pass" which had entrance to Natural History Museum/Intrepid/Statue of Liberty/Top of the Rock and Empire State building. A nice benefit of using it was for Empire State, you could also go up on the evening you went up in the day so you can see the day and night skyline from it.

Katz Deli was another great experience - keep an eye out for that one, gets mega busy though. Don't think I have ever seen a restaurant with that kind of footfall! Sandwich didn't let us down though.

We also did a Ice Hockey game out at the Prudential Centre (New Jersey Devils) as tickets for MSG were crazy prices. Was very easy to get out there, single train ride and a short walk to the stadium. Was mid-fed so was a couple of weeks break in play for the basketball but the Ice Hockey was a great spectacle and good fun to watch.

We got our moneys worth out of the Metro ticket and used it on the bus a couple times also when Metro didn't get out certain areas. Again, like other big cities, relativily easy to navigate!

@poosemon do you have a link for the city pass you used? I’m seeing a few similar sites selling similarly named passes which do look like good deals.

Was this one :- https://www.citypass.com/new-york-comparison

At the time it was cheaper then booking individually and was offering more against the things were already planning to do....

But,worth doing your homework to compare what fits in with your schedule best. I think one had discounted theatre tickets for example but when researching didn't offer any discount on the Harry Potter show my daughter wanted to go to so we found Citypass filled our needs better.

In terms of usability was seamless and didn't have any issues. One note, if your planning on Statue of Liberty and want to get up into the head you have to be on the ball for booking that as availability is limited. We weren't so couldn't go up but the pedastall access gave that bit of extra view compared to just been on the ground and the museums in the pedastall and the one on the island were interesting enough. I know it's horses for courses as some people don't really rate it but we thought it was a worthwhile thing to have done on our itinerary, certainly didn't think we wasted any time. Happy to answer any questions though!

Thank you. We saw one with theatre tickets too which does have what my wife wants to see and the discount was pretty good so may go for that one.

I don’t think either of use are interested in going into the statues head so all good there.
