Suggestions please. Places to stay, go, eat and things to do. Cool things to buy with the good exchange rate.

I've been before and have done the usual tourist stuff but this will be the first time I've been with a bit of money in my pocket.

Thanks in advance.

Ben.

I was in New York in December and visited the site of the WTC. To be honest I was very disappointed, it really is nothing more than a big construction site. I knew that the construction of the new tower would dominate, but I expected some sort of temporary memorial where people could reflect on what happened. All I found was a couple of crappy plastic boards. Real shame, it seemed to me that commerical interests where put before everything else.

Lots to do in NY though, statue of Liberty, shopping, take in a show and just explore. Can easily fill 4-5 days there.

As I've said I've done all the standard tourist stuff before. Shopping fair enough. What gadgets are much cheaper there than here though?

Probably just end up buying clothes as usual though....

All "Apple" products are significantly cheaper, the 5th Avenue store is very impressive. I bought a few macs, an iphone and several ipods when I was over.

If you've done all the touristy things before, then there is not much to do in NY apart from shopping and eating. Afterall it's just a big city. I would just explore and see what you find, do it on foot, you're move likely to find something interesting.

Use the search! :p

Have replied to threads like these too many times!

Have a good time and bring me back some Juniors cheesecake from Grand Central Station ;)

Try and go to a basketball or american football game? If not in NY itself you can get a bus from the port authority to the New Jersey sports complex which has loads of stadiums and I'm sure there'd be something on, great fun :)

Have you done the not-so-obvious tourist stuff, like wander round soho, or little italy/chinatown? Interesting little bars and cafés tucked away, pretty cool place.

And go to the Manchester Pub, it's a little english pub which is a bit of a dive but has sky sports on non-stop :P It's on 2nd and 49th or something like that

Or jump in a cab and ask them to take you to a club with lots of hot women in the meatpacking district.....can't remember the name of the place I ended up but it certainly fulfilled the criteria :p

Going up the Empire State Building was probably the best "touristy" thing I did when I was there. You get some seriously spectacular views from up there.

Also going out to the Statue of Liberty and back gives you some great views of the city from the water.

Yeah go see a Basketball match. We saw the Knicks play at Madison Square Gardens (charity match Vs an Israeli team)- fantastic.

Go see a show- we saw the Lion King - also fantastic and great views over Time's Square from the lobby.

I stayed at the Affinia Dumont, fantastic hotel.

I got most of the hotel reviews, trip advice etc from www.tripadvisor.com.

Once you've done that go to 'the Top of the Rock' at the Rockafeller Centre. Was great at night. Also there's an NBC store there, great for NBC/Sci-Fi channel merchandise if you want that kind of thing.

I was there in November but spent most of the trip half cut. Did most of the usual touristey stuff and shopping too. If you're after good bars try out "Bourbon St." on Amsterdam and 80th. You can't miss it, there are bras and knickers hanging up all round the bar and if you go in on a student night, you'll get all the student girls up dancing on the bar :D

Another bar which we spent a day in was on Staten Island. I can't remember the name of it but when walking off the ferry, walk straight ahead onto the main road, hang a right and it's about 200 yards down there on the left. It's the only one on that block so hard to miss.

You'll probably be sick of looking at Irish bars when you get there but there's one on W47th between 6th and 7th called the Pig & Whistle. The drink is cheap and the craic is ninety at the weekends.

Come to think of it I didn't really do a lot of activities when I was there so I can't really give any advice on that. We went with the best intentions but just ended up half cut.

Mostly just the obvious stuff. Sports event is a good idea, cheers.

Been looking at Apple stuff on t'web. Thanks for the tip. How much are iPhones sim free though?

The new iphones can't currently be software unlocked. But it is expected it will be cracked once apple release a new software version, which is should be around the 15th of this month. So a hack would be available by the end of Jaunary. Even if it never is, you can still use it as an ipod touch, so you can't really lose.

Apple accessories are also a very good deal, headphones, cases and the like. Great selection too.

I'm sure I've seen people on here with Orange iPhones though.

Also the frogs legal system mean the iPhone can't be locked to one network over there so it must be possible.

So did you take out a contract in the States to buy the iPhone?

If you've seen iPhones on Orange, they are either older iPhones (older than any sold in the UK) or they are unlocked ones bought from France.

You can't unlock new iPhones (yet) as peter said.

I'm not really clued up on the situation with the French and German iphone. But I know for sure that the new American iphones cannot be software unlocked at the moment. Apple changed the bootloader, this broke all the existing software hacks. A back door has been found, but this cannot be exploited until a new version of the firmware is released. None of this impacted already hacked phones, they still work fine.

The UK iphone cannot be sim unlocked either, but it can be tricked into working with a O2 pay and go sim, so you don't have to sign up to a contract.

I never signed up to AT&T, I just walked into the Apple store and asked for 2 iphone. I signed no contract. If you try an buy from an AT&T store they might asl for a deposit, just say no, and go to the apple store.

Apple also provide a full internation warranty (iphone excluded), so there are no problems with bringing the stuff back home. The mac mini I bought turned out to have a fauty cd drive, apple sorted it out no problem. They did not care that it was bought in the US
