Just getting into researching a build for my son. I’ve put aside approx £1k to buy parts needed.
I know there are countless threads already (which have been helpful) but just wanted to see if anyone has seen any really good offers or recommendations as each thread I read takes me on a different journey!!

In a nut shell my son will be mainly playing games like fortnight but I want to future proof it to some extent! Plus I may end up playing WOW again on it - so smooth play and graphics.

Many thanks

The RX 6700 seems to be back near to £300 again (as opposed to £350), which is handy as I think the 3060 Ti FE is out of stock again.

The 5700X/5800X seem to both be down to £250, which is attractive with the 12400/12400F going up some £30 lately.

The 5600X is back on offer too, at £170.

What would you buy? What would you pair them with? Lol

Cheers

This is a spec similar to what I built back in July for my 21 year old Nephew.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,100.86 (includes delivery: £0.00)

This is what I'd buy now.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £951.71 (includes delivery: £0.00)

This is great - why the change? Just due to cost and what’s available?

The prices are yoyoing all over the place at the moment so a good deal can become terrible overnight and vice versa. The buy now build from Grimley above would be an excellent PC but by next week the prices may have all changed. Put a decent priced I TB NVME SSD into the above build and you are good to go.

Thanks all - I have responded individually but due to being new to the forum they are awaiting mods approval.

Corsair 4000d airflow has shot up in price since I bought it. It went on offer the day after I bought it and the Price dropped by £20  The Sapphire GFX card is £50 cheaper than the powercolor card (I paid £380 for latter card) The Gaming plus has 4 more usb ports than the Tomahawk & I own the latter board. The Lian-li case & Corsair PSU bundle deal is good if you are not too fussed about case airflow. I forgot slotting in a SSD in the 2nd build. SN570 seems to be a Forum Choice and I did buy one earlier in the year to fit in the Other nephews rig. MSI AM4 boards are on the whole pretty good.

doing a bit of rgb asmy son likes the look, and so do his friends...so maybe yours does too..

1) Shop around..prices fluctuate wildly from place to place, as put above

For AMD my choice
CPU 5600X for £169 or 5600 for £139.99...on OCuk both but 5600 on preorder only as no stock left
cooler arctic a35 argb
Mobo Asus Tuf Gaming b550 plus wifi II...on offer away for £149.99
Ram corsair 32gb vengeance rgb rs black 3200c16 £112.99 or veangeance rgb pro 3600c18 for £118.99 away (same place as mobo)..with later you can actually get 2 sticks of rgb ram without the actual ram inside to populte motherboard to fill out all 4 sticks(just completes look..for £30..side note that, not recommendation to buy it)
psu OCuk got rm750 for £99 in white which is good price. Away, but free delivery seen the RM750X in black for £102
Case subjective, and think the corsair 4000D or X are great if price is right..x comes with 3 sp elite fans in front and if you don't like the glass you can buy the airflow front for £8 from corsair, but elite fans are £54 seperately..phanteks p400a on offer here for £72.99 also with vertical gpu riser which think is good deal also..corsair more modern clean line look though, but depends on price..at mo think corsair at £110(D) and £134(X) too high..4000x was £99 recently..prob go down there again for black fri my guess, just have to keep watching price
SSD(nvme) gen3 1tb SN570 for £75 on ocuk ..seen gen4 crucial P3P for £90 and the P5P for £98 away

I put the rm750x in build below, but remember can be had for £102 away, and the asus mobo, again away for £149.99, so saving £57..also you can save £70 on the ssd, just saw 2tb sn770 on offer down at £145, thought not bad for a gen4 drive..as gaming the drive will be doing reading mostly, not writing, so s/b more than good enough...doing large transfer files is where this drive suffers a little..but downloading games will be via internet so not extactly going to be held back there either..games are large..my son uses my pc and have a 2tb drive in mine..he's fast filling it up

For gpu, depends when you want to buy..the 3060tife would be my preferred choice at £369, but @Tetras pointed out just gone out of stock(was in stock yesterday)..last time went out of stock, was restocked within a couple of weeks..i see the 3070ti went out of stock also, and that's been stocked for last couple months..wonder what's going on..maybe holding back and releasing another load when amd annouce their new gpu's? sneaky if they did, or might be holding back for stock for black fri, when people buy pc parts

My basket at OcUK:
so £727 with most expensive ram, mobo and psu buying away and 1tb SN570, leaving £273 for gpu for £1k budget

Total: £840.76 (includes delivery: £0.00)

if wanting to buy everything from OCUK
cut to 5600, changed board to the aorus elite(i chose a board with wifi in it to make like little easier so less constricted to pc placement for your son)..psu 650w but still a good unit with 10yrs warranty..leaves £330 for gpy..would still try 3060tife...you have to go to nvidia website for that card..will like to there distributor(they only used 1 for the fe cards in Uk for 3000 series)

On laptop and left mouse at work so not linking anything tonight

Nothing wrong with any of it but a few suggestions

980 1tb 600tbw 3500/3000 tbw is terabyte written..basically how much you can write to the drive before it starts to fail on av
980 250gb 150 tbw2900/1300
so £113 combined...might want to delete links by the way..against forum rules to link competitor...above is the endurance of drive and read write speeds. ssd nvme drives aren't as efficient is small storage size, as you can see by the much lower read/write speed and also endurance of the 250gb drive...write speed is nearly a 3rd of the write speed of the 1tb model
Why not go with something like a 2tb SN770 drive..it's a more budget gen 4 drive, but 600 tbw endurance, and read write speeds 5150/4850 it's on offer at £144 on OCuk at mo reduced from £180...it's more than good enough for gaming
aorus elite will work but no wifi on that board..don't know if you need it but nice to have...the b550 tuf gaming II wifi is on offer away for £149.99
aio cooler think only has a 1yrs warranty...up to you, personally i'd get a aio with a longer one...you can get the h100i elite capellix for £103 if you search...comes with a 5yrs warranty..icue will link with the ram you've chosen
I would not pay £400 for an rtx 3060...it's about 30% slower than a 3060ti...try and wait for a restock of the 'fe' cards..you'll have to look at nvidia website for that..£369 when in stock and best value card..just checked, back in stock

an alternative to lian li and corsair psu...similar price..phanteks 10yrs warranty psu so good, phanteks case plenty of room and mesh front so has airflow..it's on offer and they throwing in the riser and vertical gpu mount for free too...just an alternative...nothing wrong with the combo you've chosen
