hello all !
ill start by saying I haven't overclocked a pc in years like years years back when I did it was light gumping up the Mhz and compensating with a little more voltage and bigger coolers .
thats where my experience ends !

just built my new rig as follows
rampage iv black edition
i7 4820k 3.7Ghz (2011)
16Gig g.skill 2400Mhz trident X
corsair H100i
sapphire r9 280x duel

I would like to run a mild pre set OC that's stable and safe I have found the following in the bios
. OC for air cooled pc
.OC for watercooled pc

I select the air cooled and my boot up is not stable . I have not been brave enough to try watercooled
also my ram is running at 1333 this seems a little low ?

am I looking at the wrong presets ? can anyone point me out in the right direction ?
or any one in Hampshire uk want to get hands on and help me set this up ? some beers in it !

apologies if this is in the wrong section !

If you install the AI Suite that comes with the Motherboard - there are preset OC's there at the moment.
One is set for 4.5Ghz which is what im running personally and I get around 55 Degrees on load 31 on Idle.

Not really the best method of overclocking, would be better to manually do it in the BIOS. Have you tried setting the XMP profile followed by multiplier? You may be able to get 4.5 on stock volts which would be a good start and work up from their.

There is also a sticky on overclocking the 2011 platform, have you read that at all?

Upto 4.5ghz it's as easy as about 3 or 4 changes!! After that if temps allow it gets a bit more in depth. And for Christ sake don't buy a high end board and use auto OC!! Take your time, read lots and enjoy your board ;)

I usually run the asus real bench 2 to test for stability certainly the latter 2 tests and if it passes that it's stable enough for me, gaming, benchmarks etc

I've done it both ways thus far, going through the Bios disabling Speedstep etc and changing the volts and bumping up the multiplier.

I've done it with the AI Suite also - Get very similar results.

I do plan on reverting to the Manual Overclock however as it seems 1/2 Degrees lower than the AI Suite OC on Standard volts.

I'll have a look at the Stick for OC'ing the 2011 platform thanks!

Righty having a play today and I can ramp up and down cpu over clocks with no problem at all .
Ram is giving issues ! Using xmp to make 2400 MHz my mosfets are getting epic hot and BSOD . Dropped to 1600MHZ and the temperature drematicaly drops all ram voltages are 1.65v
