I've only ever built one PC before and it was about 5 years ago that i did it. It was just a simple job of slapping everything on the motherboard and away i went.

Have things changed much over the years? Are there decent guides (with nice pictures!) for putting a new sytem together?

Im interested in correct procedures and precautions to take, what i need to do in the bios, how to install Vista on a blank HD etc. etc.

Many thanks.

Itll be basically the same as your previous build, the technology has moved on a fair bit, but building the system is still pretty much the same. Heres a guide from corsair on building a system from scratch including installing the os etc.

As long as the parts youve chosen are compatible youll be fine, take your time, and if you do have any issues post up your qwerys and im sure someone here will help you out. Good luck with the build.:)

I would say it's pretty much the same now, just pop all the components in the right slots and off you go! There are plenty on guides just have a google, you'll quickly see they all say the same things.... However your components all come with specific instructions for their installation so you would be just as well off following them rather than some generic guide, just use the guides to give you an overview of what you're aiming for

everything should come with detailed instructions, the motherboard manual will definately tell you where everything should go, some cables even have labels on these days.

general common sense and usual electronics procedures and precautions should do you fine :) you should use an anti static band which you should be able to get from any electronics store near you. don't take parts out of their anti static bags till you are actually installing them. and dont have it plugged in while your fiddling with parts inside.

nothing in bios you should need to touch, all you will need to do is install drivers from CD's provided once you have an OS installed.

Thanks guys. Getting a tidy cable set up has always been a problem for me too. My case has 4 fans so i always end up with loads of power cable all over the place.
