Newbie building to a budget...

Hey all, I am looking to upgrade my current dell arsemobile to something a little better. The budget I have been given to get my components is £1000, which is fairly considered I think :D I can go say £20-£30 pounds out of my other fund if it just tips it over.

I understand general components, how things work, and what I am looking to buy for more etc. I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on this setup. Any feedback is good, as I am buying the components in one to two weeks, and external links to other sites are also appreciated :P

The rig is for gaming, lasting a good few years at a very high spec, and developing on the Unreal SDK on directx-11 (hence the 8gb recommended RAM). Best framerates and multitasking is what I am looking for, something which'll tear through anything.

I would like it to have as much power as possible for the budget so I can upgrade on it in the future when I get more money for things like a blueray drive, sound card, gaming peripherals etc.

Thanks to all,
Ollie.
(I will update the list as the feedback comes in :D)

Hi welcome
You want to be looking at a SandyBridge set up, socket 1155 mobo and CPU, an i5 2500k CPU and something like an Asus P8P67 Pro Rev B3 mobo, which would then go with the dual channel RAM you listed, the CPU/mobo you listed would need triple channel
You'll also need a much better PSU for that sort of setup, I recimdnd you read the guide in my sig/at top of page for a better idea of a more rounded system, and if you need to ask anymore questions feel free

Is the i7 in a sandybridge not worth the extra money in real terms then? I had been reading up and sorta stupidly disregarded sandybridge, but did want an i7 on either setup :)
thanks for the help again

also, hardrives not included, i realised that after I hit the post button. I do need them and was looking at RAID0 with them too...

i assume you dont need a hard drive, as you havent listed one in your build.

also, do you need this labelflash thing on the DVD drive, because you could save a little bit by not going for it

i know literally nothing about what developing on the unreal engine is going to need resources wise. however, im going to assume it will have the same requirements as gaming, but just a little extra ram for this suggestion:

i dont know if you will need the cooler or not. i believe the processor comes without.

if you were willing to spend another £10-£30 on this, you could get a fantastic cooler and overclock the nuts off the processor, but i tried to stay within budget

in regards to the unreal devkit, yes, that's about it :D
as for the harddrives, I do need them but forgot to put them in, sorry
I don't really need the labelflash either, was just me playing around with the extra money
and yes I would spend the extra money on the cooler for sure
thanks :)

how much space do you want on your hard drives, and how many do you want? (do you want more than one so you can RAID them in some way)

*edit*
changed the DVD drive, and added a 500GB HDD

it looks like you wont be able to get crossfired 6950's in a £1000 budget, which is a shame, because it kicks the single 580 into the middle of next week. check out this comparison site to see what i mean: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/299?vs=305

One Hard drive would bring it into budget.

The 750W is enough for this machine. Look at the load power consumption for the 6970 CF
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4209/amds-radeon-hd-6990-the-new-single-card-king/18
Well within spec

Also, you should get a nice overclock out of this cooler :)

^^^ that build has one of the old motherboards. you really want one of the B3 revision ones.

sadly, that brings the price up by £15

however, using the case he originally had brings it right back down again. (i have literally no idea what cases are good or bad though)

*edit*
also, will that power supply be enough at 750W?
heres the build in a way that i would be happy to reccommend someone. i changed the case simply so i could be sure the graphics cards would fit. if someone can confirm that it is not a problem in the coolermaster RC 502 centurion II that would be great:

take off one of the hard drives for now, i'll just use a standard nonraid setup to begin with and get one later, then it's just finding a suitable case like you said :)

there we go, suitable case and one hard drive, coming in a teensy bit over budget.
just need to make sure the cooler will fit on top of the RAM and you'll be good to go

you also get a window to see all your epic kit

it was fun looking at what I could get with my money, but I shoulda posted here weeks ago :P thanks to all who responded, and cheers a lot for the help reaper ^^

Any particular reason youre recommending an 850W PSU for a a system that only draws 600W under furmark?

IMO this would be better balanced set up, you prob wont need anymore than one gfx card at present, unless your resolution is 2560+, incl a SSD now to install, its much harder to rearrange installs than it is to add a 2nd card later down the line, 750W is more than enough (in fact 650 would be but the 650W modular PSUs I would recomend are either out of stock or more than this 750)
The retail cooler is only £8 more than the OEM this week (as opposed to the £30 it was last week) so is worth purchasing for the increased warranty + free game
This et up would still allow the addition of a 2nd card later if you found the need

what sort of fps does that run a directx11 game at though, i would prefer to get a solidstate later if it meant I could play the more graphically intense titles now

Therell be very few (read 1 or 2 - metro2033 and crysis2) games which cant be maxed out at 1080p with a decent framerate using a single high end card, and tbh by the time you come to need a 2nd card youd be as well selling your current card and buying a new one, and this is coming from someone who only recently ditched a dual card set up

thrifles, i reccomended an 850W PSU because i know very little about power supplies. the power supply calculator i use came up with ~790W, so i went for an 850W one to be on the safe side. i figured it was far better to overestimate than underestimate power requirements

as for the graphics cards, buying the second one later is just far too sensible
