Not sure if this is the right forum so sorry if its not. But if i convert an avi file to standard mpeg-1 will it run on dvd players?! thanks :)

EDIT: sorry i think it is in the wrong forum should be in optical storage etc etc, my mistake for not checking thoroughly

You're in the right place, but most of the talk around here is about stills.

DVD standard is mpeg2, VCD is mpeg1.
I think Nero can make a VCD for you straight from the avi.

Easiest way is actually from my experience is a proggie called DivxtoDVD now called ConvertxToDVD, its made by VSO software, super quick, very efficient encoding, awsome quality at medium bitrate. The new version you have to pay for but you can still find the older one for free! New version rocks tho!! S

Edit: Its also not as easy as just throwing a MPEG2 file or even a .VOB onto a dvd and it'll play in a dvd player, you also need to create ifos and bup files, cos dvds have a structure to be followed i guess you could put it. Check out a website called cdr-zone.com...play about in their forums as well! S
