Hello, cool site from what ive seen of it, not many computer sites have dedicated forums, so quite handy..

ive never looked into the whole overclock al deal as i dont want to risk mucking things up, mean ive looked in the bio on my laptop which is in my sig and i couldnt overclock the CPU anyways, but otherwise ive not tried it with any other computer, so at the moment in time its not of a concern for any builds..

So anyways onto my build, its for my missus not myself as i was going to build myself one before, but then i got this laptop which is good enough for now and its a long overdue birthday present lol .. i did buy her a full system months ago for 30 quid which shes happy with so far, its an Ideq N1 with the following spec:

Biostar Motherboard Model ???
Mobile AMD Sempron 3300+ CPU 2.??ghz
1.25gb pc3200 Ram(recently upped from 768 pc2700/3200 it came with)
Nvidia 8500GT GPU
250gb HDD
Multi Card Reader(though recently removed)
220w Power Supply
Pci 2 port Usb Adaptor
Windows Vista HP SP1

think thats about it for specs.. its a good cool little computer, missus been pleased with it, more so now i upped the Ram to speed it up abit, its out first experience with AMD and this type of setup and we both like it, but im undecided what im going to do next as this stuff interests me(not so much her) and i just want to play around trying things out and at the same time giving the missus something good to use, so im thinking whether to carry on upgrading the N1 with either a 2nd HDD(IDE not SATA) or one big SATA and maxing the Ram at its limit of 2gb at the same time installing windows 7 or either buy another working computer thats bigger and has more options to upgrade or start completely from scratch and bit by bit do my first build.

Okay enough rambling, heres what ive come up with so far using this site alone(where i purchase is undecided right now)..

(i dont know how people link withwout full link)
Upon reading the motherboard specs the onboard graphics sounds really good most likely more than good enough and i guess the 500w supply included would be good enough hence not linking any alternatives.. having a ps3 i doubt the bluray optical would get used for that, i was only thinking for the feature on the motherboard and as for the monitor i just chose the cheapest decent one i liked, like i said in the title nothing set in stone..

i havent listed a HDD as the board im looking at supports sata2 and none of the drives ive seen on here seem to support anything other than sata 3 with 6gb speeds, but for the end result its be looking at atleast 2, a small 40gb or so for windows 7 64bit and something like a 500gb plus for everything else...

the use from the computer isnt big, mean its on all the time, so ideally need it to be quiet and cool, but what she uses it for is facebook and dj streaming site amongst ebay and other searching, she also likes her pictures and has a 8 quid photo programme to edit them lol, but its mostly facebook and the games and the dj site, untill i upped the ram she couldnt play a farm game lol, so even the N1 is good for this that bit more now, but not really a system to see her into the next few years..

oh yeah forgot to mention, the one game she would like to play is Sims, i used to have them, i even had 3 on my laptop(only compatible one), but doing a 'can you run it' on her comp, its not quite upto scratch for 2 & 3(1 wasnt in the list), so need the ability to play that..

i havent totalled anything up from my findings, but before i specced one for upto £200 and ideally want to keep to that same plan, as this is bit by bit(likely monthly) the price could go up very slightly.

lot to read, but thanks for reading heh.. ;)

sorry was my typing bad lol? when i get going i dont think of anything but what im typing..

why doesnt the CPU match the MB? i didnt look properly at the CPU's, i just clicked the first and cheapest and saw some bits related to what i read of the MB? as for the budget, i could(and nearly did) spec up a good suitable system for less than £100, but that would all be used components, if i do a fresh start i would rather buy new, but since its not a gaming rig, im not going to spend like it is one..

you guys quote from this site, could likely from the stuff cheaper elsewhere, but im not here for that, i wanted to join for the forum..

OS isnt in the price, but can get a 32bit win 7 for 50 new on ebay, so 64 shouldnt be much more and can buy that now for her current system if i wanted to and may just do..

i chose the combo because it was cheap and good MB, im not bothered about the case so long i can add couple fans like..

are you saying intel will be a better setup then? i had a pent 4 3ghz before laptop, so have only experienced some of intel.

cheers for replies aswell

obviously the least earners get a mocking aswell as being a newbie aye..

if i was wanting to build something stupidly awesome, you think this thread be started how it did lol..

i want her to have atleast 4gb of ram to keep things running quickly like my laptop, but once this build however i go about it is done, then its staying like that, so i want her to have the best, but overkill and you call it for her uses

This is just the tower is £260 but will do her very nicely. Plus it includes a 64 bit OS.

It incorporates the latest FM2 processors which have decent integrated graphics (miles better than Intel) and also have enough processing grunt to come close to Intels similar specc'd Pentiums.

does look good that, but is that better than what i had linked or an alternative? sims and any photo editing aside, she mainly uses the computer for facebook and that dj site, so it needs to be like my laptop really in some cases because i can run those sites and play games without any problems at all(for a £600+ laptop i should bloody hope so ha) except it doesnt need to cost more than 300 quid .

at the moment there is a monitor, its an old dell, but obviously when it comes to completion who knows what the monitor will be, im more bothered about the computer ;)..

i imagine the OS will be installed on them systems? ideally i want her to have 2 HDD, a small for the OS and big one for everything else.. ive had my laptop for over a year and 583gb i had spare after system stuff is now down to 376gb which i raised from 300gb and at times i can feel i guess you call abit of a struggle, might just be because ive treated it like a desktop and had it running almost constantly(which has killed my battery) and filled it with crap at one stage lol, think i need to backup everything and start again lol

my advice would be this, buy a bare minimum computer now. BUT get a decent motherboard and cpu in it.

get only 2gb of ram and only a small hard drive, maybe even a 60gb boot ssd? theyre not that expensive now.

get this built and then upgrade it in your own time, when you need to there will be room to add the 500gb hdd and the extra ram. Also, trinity seems to be what you would want for a build like this.

never used ssd, they seem quite pricey for the capacity compared to ide/sata, are they the ones that use the firewire ports?

thats what i was looking at and that one i linked was 1 of 2 i liked, the other was cheap also, but had an asus board, however i liked the details on the asrock and the integrated graphics sound like they might be real good..

her Biostar supports the athlon 2 CPU i think or one of the athlons which is a better CPU than the sempron, so really id be treating a new build like i was upgrading her ideq, but with better parts

buy a small ssd then, and install the os on there, search them on google, theyre lightning compared to mechanical drives.

Advice on the laptop battery too, once its fully charged, unplug it and run it down, then recharge it again. Having it on charge at 100% kills the battery, not it being on 24/7

to answer you other question we do have a tv that can be used..

ha yeah i thought that might have been the case, but oh well i cant fix it now unless i happen to find the correct battery and for a good price..

edit: this was the other barebone and also found this intel that seems good.

maybe 200 was optimistic lol, i still wouldnt pay no more than 300 whether a monitor is included or not, seems too much for the usage..

this bad boy would suit my needs :D, i have a 500gb external HDD with some music on it and over 300gb worth of movies(over 400 downloads oops lol) which i connect to my tv and want to have a permanent media setup just for my movies and this little beaut fits the bill spot on, holds the capacity i require and has internet.

nice specs been brought to my attention.

ive been thinking about how im going to go about things and decided because that build will take awhile as im not on a regular income, im going to carry on with the few upgrades can do for her ideq, only things i wont do is fit a athlon 64 CPU as its abit fiddly and havent seen how much they go for and the other being the GPU, i dont think i can get better than the nvidia 8500GT , just to make it that bit better for her and im going to look out for a 32bit win7 as her system is ready for it now, i just dont have the 50 quid for a new one ive seen on ebay..

i did have another thought about a fresh build, was thinking about seeing if i could just get all new parts for the cube case as its a nice design and it saves money, i know it takes a micro atx board as thats whats in it now, but i dont know about what would be suitable..

http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/sffpc/content.php?S_ID=21

this is what info i can find of basic N1, ive got no pics of the case, but if someone can spec a good system that will work with it then that be great :) thanks

Would this not be suitable?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-311-OK&groupid=43&catid=2385&subcat=2038

or as suitable as you can get for that price range

that does sound suitable, like i said i didnt price anything up, just looked at a possible build..

i want her to be able to play sim3, thats the only proper game.. i want to make it handle win7 HP and constant use of facebook with the games and the music site(spicemusicradio) and simple photo editing perfectly, just like my laptop however i want her to have more than 4gb ram and 2 HDD..

if i was looking at intel then id be looking at a i3 CPU or if used parts then core2duo..

i am going to get her a laptop as she used to have one, but a basic but decent one, better with a proper computer for regular works
