Hey I know nothing about a network as I've never had one before, but I just got an xbox 360 and want to use xboxlive. Its going to be on the other side of the house from my pc (and therefore modem) so I need to do it wirelessly.

I've just bought the little usb adaptor that goes into the back of the 360 now I need to get it online, take it I need a router, but which one? Looking on the OcUK shop theres cable or adsl ones.

Also how do I set it up on my pc, I have XP and according to the "network connections" window im connected to the net through a Local area network. (I dont understand this though as Im connected to my virgin media modem....??)

Any help would be muchos appreciated and which router to get (cheapest please :D)

Thanks

You'll probably be best off contacting Virgin Media who will sell you a wireless router. I know a guy who did this about 2 weeks ago and they sent him one of these:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...ar DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL2+ Modem/Router

They didn't send him any instructions with it (which I thought was pretty poor) so I had to guide him through setting it up, but you could probably get them to send someone out and install it for you.

If you are on virgin then you need a cable router.
You are connected through a local area connection as your virgin modem is connected to you're network port on your computer.

Setting up routers is generally pretty painless and you might learn something along the way!

Virgin also do ADSL for non Cable areas.

OP: Do you have Cable or ADSL (running through phone socket)

yea i got a free router upon signing up, im in the G40 area. the routers pretty good and should allow your xbox 360 with the usb adapter to connect easily enough, make sure you find out how to set a WPA security on the router though.

Dont use Virgins router m8.

I'm on Virgin and my 360 is setup wireless using a linksys cable router, zero problems and no line dropping at all.

This is the one I bought ,
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...4GS 54Mbps SpeedBooster Wireless Cable Router

I didnt have a clue about router/wireless setup but it is very easy and I had it setup within about 10 minutes.

Am happy to help you set it up over the phone or via here if needed.

cheers,

Thundy

 the current GS is a lemon which runs VXWorks. You'd have to have a screw loose to buy one over a GL (especially given you can turn Speedbooster on with the GL)...

Ok so I bought the WRT54GL router and its all connected up and Im using the net just now on it. But I cannot set up the xbox360 to use it!!

I have made my wireless network and use a WEP64bit security and I go to the xbox dashboard and the network connection panel. When I run the test media and test Xbox Live things I only get as far as it saying that its connected to the network wirelessly - it WILL NOT ASSIGN AN IP!!!!!!

I have tried typing all the DNS and gateway and subnet masks which I found on my router's details page here by looking at http://192.168.1.1/index.asp

It also says that my starting address is 192.168.1.100 and Im allowed 50 DHCP users so Ive tried manually setting the xbox's IP address to be
192.168.1.110
192.168.1.120
192.168.1.130
192.168.1.140
192.168.1.149

none of these work!! The automatic option in the dashboard is useless too.

HELP!!!!

Try it without encryption to eliminate any issues with keys or passphrases. If that works, skip WEP and use WPA (ideally WPA2) - it's substantially more secure as long as you use a long passphrase.
