Newbie - how to overclock to 3ghz

that will be better for you.. and comes with a cooler so you can overclock.. also its cheaper (postage is included in the price)

I have the exact same kit as in that bundle plus a Scythe Ninja rev. B and have today got it to 3.2GHz stable [after some issues].

The absolute first thing you need to do is [other than installing OS, apps etc] update your BIOS. My P5B Deluxe came with 0507 or similar. I, mistakenly, updated it to rev 080...something, thinking it was the latest. It caused some stability issues with my RAM when clocking. The latest BIOS at this time is 1101 and is available from the ASUS website. Check the manual on how to update the BIOS [it is very straight forward].

You then need to alter some settings in the BIOS after you have updated.

Use this page with screenies on setting options for your BIOS: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=115217

In those screens it has you bumping the FSB up to 533. I would suggest starting at 334 [almost exactly 3GHz :)]

The voltages used are also quite high so I would suggest starting the VCore at 1.4V [in reality it will be lower as this board undervolts slightly - or at least mine does :p].

Once done save settings and reboot. Assuming you make it into Windows you need to do some stability testing. I use Orthos for the testing and Intel Thermal Analysis Tool for checking temps. CPU-Z is also very handy for showing you specific information about your overclock.

I wont go into how to push the OC further. There are plenty of threads on how to OC a C2D so I will stop there and let you have a search yourself :)

I tried this but when you go to another part of the bios it sets itself back to 266 or something like that

Hmm... not sure why it would be doing that. Have you updated the BIOS to the latest version [1101]?

You might have to clear the CMOS after the update using the CMOS jumper on the keyboard. [3 pin jumper, default position is the jumper over the left 2 pins]. To clear the CMOS disconnect your PC from the mains and then move the jumper to the right 2 pins, wait a few seconds, then move the jumper back to the left 2 pins, then reboot PC.

My BIOS did funny things after my update before I cleared the CMOS.
