Newbie: Looking at Pre-built "Titan Xenomorph".

Hello lads, I come with a small dilemma.

I'm looking into buying a high-end (or high-ish) gaming system with a budget of around £700.
Unfortunately, when it comes down to building PC's, I am clueless. I literally have no idea what to do, this leads me to just purchase pre-builds. Trouble is I understand you can get more bang for your buck if you can build the system yourself!

However, I have been looking over the "Titan Xenomorph" Intel Core i3 540 3.06GHz @ 4.20GHz with the Asus GeForce GTX 460 768mb upgrade. (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-237-OK)
Just curious, would it be worth following tutorials and building my own system, with the risk of fuxing things up in the process (baring in mind I want the system to be ready to go for xmas), or would this pre-build suit my needs?
I want to play games such as WoW, GTA IV, BFBC2, MoH and such - how well would the titan xenomorph cope with these games?

Thanks a lot,
Jack.

Hi Jack
Welcome to forums
It would cope quite well, of course it depends on what your monitors resolution is?
However by doing a custom build you could get a better system, obv, with i5 and 1 gig card easy, which would cope better
Its really quite easy to put a system together and only takes a few hours even for a novice, if you were unlucky to get sent a duff part OcUK are pretty good with RMA process so youd be able to turn it round within a week and be up and going
Theres a couple guides at teh top, one which talks you through how to put it together and one which gives you options on what to choose

Hello mate, thanks for the welcome :)
I'd running on 1920x1080 i think, haven't used the monitor that I will be using for the PC in some time (been on a mac for a year... pfft), but I think that's the reso.
I'd probably be happy to run games windowed on lower resolutions should the PC cope better, although that's obviously not what I have in mind.
Realistically, would you recommend I look into building it myself or save myself the hassle and go for the slightly more expensive / effortless option? Would the gain be significant if i built it myself?

Sorry for swarming with questions!
Jack

EDIT: I've also just looked over at the Titan Exodus, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-252-OK&groupid=43&catid=1444&subcat=1712, with the same graphics upgrade as in the OP, however this is with the i5 760 oc to 4ghz. Would this be a better idea for say 50 quid more?

Or if youre not happy OCing yourself, a half way step would be to buy one of the pre overclocked bundles, eg this
This site shows you good comparison so you can see the performance difference
Only you can decide if youre comfortable doing a self build, have a read of the guides and see what you think, but personally I think everyone should, you get much more customisable build and you learn a lot more too, of course not everyone has the time/patience/willingness
But to answer your last question, yes the i5 is worth £50 more than i3

Going to have a browser around tutorials and see if i feel confident enough. im not sure i'd want to overclock things myself incase i screwed it up to be honest, but i might try my hand at building it myself.

thanks again bud, much appreciated.
Jack.

Hi and welcome to the forums. Just remember everyone has to start somewhere. I built my first pc last year (in sig) and was pretty nervous too but after doing a bit of research, mostly watching youtube videos for the best part of a week, I was pretty confident. Main this is to take you time when building, dont rush it! Its not as hard as it looks and with a bit of preparation (and luck having no dead components) things should go swimmingly.

Overclocking is similar to building really. Research is your friend. Theres load on the net about overclocking and if you go for a popular motherboard, the likes of asus or gigabyte theres a ton on info around and plenty of people here to help guide you...like they did me! As for the level of overclocking, presumably your not looking to go crazy with it so I really wouldnt too much about it!! Its actually easier than you think, just dont get hung up trying to achieve a certain speed because somebody else has!

Building is just like lego, the hard part is just making sure everything works together. Just have a look through the sticky and everything should go fine. :)

This is really true. Computer compenents are expensive legos. And I think it should not be understated that it is a really good feeling to have built your own system. Especially, if like me you have never done it before, it makes you appreciate the rig and understand more about how it functions.

Would definitely recommend it if you have the time to educate yourself. Not only will you get more for less, you will also set yourself up to save a lot of money in the future as well.

Thanks very much for the helpful feedback guys, I appreciate it.
I am going to look into building one myself, perhaps with similar specs to that of the 2 pre-builds i linked earlier in the thread (xenomorph and exodus).
If i were to build my own, would you guys be able to give me an idea of what components to buy, as 95th did in his post?
Bare in mind I want to keep it around £700 and be able to run games like GTA IV, MoH, CoD, WoW on all high.
Thanks,
Jack.

i would prefer to build my own, however sometimes it is just easier to buy pre-built, overclockers do have some pritty good ones.
depends on your needs.

if you are building your own,
look for a Intel core i5 or an AMD x4
get atleast 4GB of DDR3
decent 500GB or 1TB hard drive.

you will also need to buy a copy of windows 7, unless you have one.
this is about £100 depending on version
