Newbie Memory issue

I have a Asrock motherboard which supports DDR2 and DDR

Currently have 1x1GB DDR2 in the motherboard, which works fine

I wanted to try 2x1GB DDR memory, removed the DDR2, however following happens

• Boot up screen detects 3GB of memory
• Boot up gets stuck at "Checking NVRAM"

Any ideas?

I have, i took out the DDR2 before inserting DDR
