Hello there, I quite fancy the challenge of building my own PC. This will also allow me to give my old PC to my sister who is a complete technophobe!

Anyway, i have been reading the excellent build guide and have tried to build up a set of components that I will need

Processor - CP-120-AM AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (Socket 939) - Retail (CP-120-AM)
Memory - MY-046-GL GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS3 (GE2GB3200BDC) (MY-046-GL)
MotherBoard - MB-101-AS Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-101-AS)
Graphics - GX-028-BG BFG 3DFuzion GeForce 7300 LE Turbo Cache 256MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-028-BG)
Case - CA-018-EN Enermax CS-527 Case Black No PSU (CA-018-EN)
Hard Disk - HD-008-FS Fujitsu 73.5GB MAW3073NP 10,000RPM SCSI 8MB Cache (U320 68 Pin) - OEM (HD-008-FS)
CD/DVD - CD-044-LG LG GSA-H10ABRL 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - Retail (CD-044-LG)
Power - CA-006-HP Hiper HPU-4B580 Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Blue (CA-006-HP)

I basically read through the guide and tried to pick some decent sounding components, but the truth of it is, I really don't have much of a clue.

Could you pleae look through the list and point out any glaring compatibilty issues that I have blindly stumbled upon and any other general advice would be welcome :D:D

My PC will be mainly use for data to day office applications, some video capture and edit, as well as the occasional game.

many thanks

alan

Well it looks okay apart from the fact you've specced a SCSI hard disk and no card to support it. If you tell us a rough budget, we can spec you up a Conroe machine which should give you better performance :)

Forget that SCSI disk. Get a Seagate 7200.10 SATAII disk instead. It's going to be loads cheaper with comparable performance.

In fact, a Conroe build might not be a bad idea but the 4000+ chips are cheap are overclocking like mad of late.

Thanks for the info, don't really have a budget as such, really looking at it as a challenge, but let's say £600 excluding monitor/keyboard/mouse/printer etc. But this can be increased if required.

I will be buying all stuff though my company, so no need for VAT :D

Is it for gaming? If not you can get a cheaper graphics card and a faster memory.

Although I don't game with my PC at the moment, it is something I will want to get into.

Tax evasi0n for the win.

hail-hail, the rig I spec'd would be loads faster than the 4000+. If you decide to go AMD, at least don't do socket 939 as it's been obsolete for some time now.

Just a shame you didn't read my earlier post ;)

:D

I would get billy's spec, but change the conroe 6600 for the 6300 and get 2GB ram.

Also as you don't game don't get a turbo cache graphics card as these will use system ram for graphics memory.

Intel Core 2 Duo is probably the best way to go right now :) It's the latest technology, its price and performance is excellent, and it clocks well.

The Athlon64's are damn good as well and clock well - don't take this the wrong way, you specced a decent machine (apart from the HDD :P).

But the Core 2 Duo will be more future proof. I personally would go for the 6600 on a decent mobo of your choice, with 2Gb of Geil PC2 6400 RAM, a Western Digital Raptor HDD and to be honest I'd buy a decent graphics card now. I know for a fact that once you get into gaming, it'll be like a bug biting ya and you'll want to spend more and more to get a decent rig :D

Hf shopping :)

Personally, I'd get a cheaper GPU (perhaps an X800), stay with the E6600, and get 2 GiB RAM.

The GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (MY-058-GL) for £109.95 is a stunning deal found in TWO.

Thanks for everyone comments, I am now at:

Let's say for now that I will not be gaming on my machine, what would I be missing out on if I downgraded the GX card, and I was tobuy a Leadtek GeForce 6200 Turbo Cache 256MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-060-LT) @ £23 instead?????

I'd go for a 7300GT if your not going to game :). But your spec looks REALLY nice if you ask me, maybe change the mobo to an Asrock if you dont want to overclock (you havent stated so I dont know).

If he's not overclocking then we can save money all over the place. That spec should be good for some very good clocks. It's a good spec.

no intention of overclocking at the moment, just want to a sound base of knowledge build my own PC and take it from there. I have been using PCs for years, but having a little more time now, I want to get into them a bit more.
