I'm new to overclocking so be nice, my problem is that for some reason my computer has reset itself to defaults when it was perfectly stable before. Anybody know why before i attempt to overclock again and the whole process repeats?

I'm using a q6600 on a gigabyte X48-DS4, it was sitting stable at 3.0ghz and by stable i mean 8 hours prime stable. I'm really confused plus now on my most recent attempt i have set cpu voltage to 1.25 however cpu-z says it is at 1.216. I followed the little guide on this forum and everything was going well before and for a couple days it stayed at 3ghz but now has randomly switched back to 2.4 :(. can someone help explain this to me please.

*edit* I now understand the voltage differences, vdrop or something, but for some reason it showed no drop what so ever before, bizzarre

hey, its possible that if your system crashed it reset to defaults as a safety mechanism just in case, I wouldnt worry too much about it, just load your old settings, much easier if your bios supports OC profiles. vdrop/vdroop varies depending on load amongst other things so sometimes its more noticable than others (these are 2 different things and could be a combination youre seeing)

I have this mobo. It will reset to defaults when a POST fails from bad OC settings. As mentioned, best to make use of the BIOS profiles (F11 I think) when testing.

Set the "FSB overvoltage" to +0.10v or 0.20v to combat vdroop. Also enable "loadline calibration", as this is what it's for. :)

Also, 1.25v seems low for a Q6600 gunning for 3GHz. I'll refrain from commenting further though as I've never owned a quad.

And have you flashed to the latest BIOS? I had to because of my 45nm CPU, be worth it reading the release notes to see if it could help you.

Yep 1.25 does seem a wee bit low, unless you have one of the older lower vid chips which may well do 3.0ghz on stock volts.

thanks, well i've set on a new mission to achieve higher clocks as i keep seeing people at 3.2 and 3.4 and i'm feeling left out. I can't find anything on my bios to allow me to restore old settings.

thanks orangey i shall try that now

*edit*

Flashing to latest bios sounds a little scary, i'm trying FSB overvoltage thing you suggested and seems to have done the trick with the voltages , and as general consensus is that 1.25 is far too low i'm going to start at 1.3 and work my way from there.

As for my VID i believe it is 1.325 (means nothing to me)

the Vid is the voltage your chip is rated at to run at rated speed, so if youre OCing then normally you want to be above your Vid, though you can go below it and still be stable, this is the minimum voltage they recomend

ahhhhh i understand now, thanks 95thrifles, might explain why the lower volts weren't working lol :D. seems to be stable so far on 1.28 , don't want to speak to soon. Gives me something to do tonight i suppose.

HELLO SIUMATFUNG! how are you? not still traumatised from your trip to the dentist a couple days ago i hope.

thank you for asking but im all fine and dandy now just washing my mouth out with salty water every day init:D however i might be dropping my cpu back down to 3ghz or somewhere around there cos its taking too much of a crater to stay at 3.5ghz:D
