Hello all,

Just about to attempt my first overclock

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/2664/cpupreoc.jpg

the above is my current settings. I'm hoping to get around 3.0ghtz.

Quick couple of questions before I start however - multiplier is listed as 6.0x but every so often in CPU-z it changes to 10x. Should I be worried about this?

Secondly RAM is set at 2:3 FSB : DRAM. Should I change this to 1:1 before starting or leave it at its current setting?

Thanks

Hi CooK1E,

what motherboard, memory and cooling do you have?

The CPU multi has dropped to [x6] because of the EIST function (Enhanced Intel Speedstep) which is perfectly normal when the processor is idle . . .

As your board is currently at 266MHz-FSB it has used an upwards [3:2] memory multiplier to get the sticks running at 400MHz (DDR2-800) which is perfectly normal . . . however as soon as you increase the FSB the memory frequency will fly away into orbit! :p

As I'm not sure what mobo you have I can't be sure what memory multis you have access too but consider this chart to get a feel for how they work . . . as far as the motherboards brain is concerned there is only 266/333/400MHz FSB and you will only be plugging in DDR2-666/800/1066 memory, once you deviate from this concept your entering the "Wild Lands" :D

I'm thinking that *if* your sticks are DDR2-800 and *if* your board has good support for the 333-Strap then switching to the [6:5] memory multi will allow you to clock your processor from 2660MHz (10x266) to 3330MHz (10x333) fairly easily . . . a good first nOObie step! . . . if you crack that and you can produce screenies like this then others will be able to help you more easily!

Sorry should have been a little bit more helpful with my post.

Realised that I'd left intel C1E enabled but disabled speed step. Finally it displays correctly! God I feel like an idiot especaily considering I actually checked them before posting.

Spec:
E6700
4 x 1gb Geil PC6400 Cas 4 ram
Asus P5N-D
8800GTX

Hopefully this should be a better screen cap

Hi CooK1E,

thats better! :) . . . would help to include CoreTemp in that screenie also! (are you using the stock cooler?) . . .

Hmm, I see you have the Asus P5N-D (NVIDIA nForce® 750i SLI™) which sadly I have no exprience of, all my LGA775 clocking has been done only using Intel (AGTL+) chipsets so I probably can't help you as much as I would like too! :o

Up to 3.0GHz already! :p . . . run some Prime95 Blend on that and see how it holds up and how the temps are!

I'd like to think that I'm really good at this but i think its more a case of sheer luck than skill. I've literally gone into the BIOS and adjusted the numbers thats it.

Upped it to 333mhtz

I'm running a Zalman cooler with some Arctic Silver, which I missed out of the spec.

Another idiot question - should I up the RAM timings? I've got it set on unlinked at the moment so the RAM is sitting at 400 mhtz (doubled makes the 800mhz that its rated at). Am I better running linked or unlinked? The only reason I set unlinked and put it to that was because when it was linked the board wouldn't boot.

Haven't primed it at the mo, but ran assasins creed 2 for about 20 minutes and temps were pretty low.

That looks good to me CooK1E :)

I'd hold it there and get some Prime95 Blending done and generally just run the system for a few days to see if its totally stable before pushing on!

Cheers for all the help Big.Wayne - have left it where it is for now. Temps were hitting around 60o under full load, but the loft where my PC is can get pretty hot. I'd say it was hitting around 50o with a cool room.

Think I will tackle the GFX card next and then upgrade to 64bit windows for that extra bit of performance.

Thanks again.
