Hi all.

I am just asking a general question really. If I picked two graphic cards at random, say Radeon 6970 and 6990. Both would play the games in high settings and the 6990 may have a slightly higher frame rate. However, at the top end, would the picture quality actually be better in game play rather than just the frame rate.

I have just bought the 6870 and its clear as a bell at high quality and wondered (as I intend to build a new machine) how to get an improved picture?

Asuming all the game settings are the same, you would see no difference in picture quality, if you want a better picture, you need a better monitor

You will find some of the same model of cards like the 6950 also come in various versions like the msi twin Frozr which is overclocked and comes with a better heat sync / fans to run faster at a lower temperature. It really depends what you are looking for.

Thanks for your responses. So basically you are saying that as long as my current graphics card (Powercolor 6870) can play games in max rez smoothly, getting anything better (GTX580) is not worth it?

Generally all cards of the same manufacturer and generation have the same image quality low to high end. Some just work a lot slower etc, as stated above monitors help but as you stated it's clear as a bell I don't think you are missing out on much :)

Regarding the GTX580 question, they suit monitors or multi monitor setups above a certain resolution and would be wasted on anything lower than say 1920x1080. A 6870 would probably give pretty good performance upto 1920x1200 with a few limitations on some graphical quality settings, High instead of ultra textures, less or no AA/tessellation etc.
