Hi all never used or even seen linux before, But what im thinking is, Is there any advantage to using Linux over windows?
I mean i know windows is a nice looking operating system but other than that is there anything else??

Any help would be great thanks

Linux is customizable.
Linux is less bloated.
Linux is nicer to work with.
Linux has a friendly community.
Linux is free.
Linux just has so much on offer.
Linux is vulnerable to less viruses and those it is are dealt with easily by the on-board security.
This
The best things in life are free.

I could go on... but the bottom line is this: Linux is great. But until such a time (hopefully the release of Chrome OS) as it actually has a market share there is less compatibility, meaning Gaming and some other stuff is best left to Windows, which is where GRUB comes in.

If im honest i use it for.
Internet general surfing
Email
Msn sometimes
Sometimes word documents
Spreadsheets
Burning the odd cd

Thats all i can think of at the moment

I think gaming is easier on windows, thats about it now. Everything else is easy!

Download and install virtualbox and install ubuntu, debian, opensuse, fedora. Basically anything you like the sound of on www.distrowatch.com

The joy of virtualbox is that you cant destroy your windows drive:) See how you get on and report back.

I dont game anymore on pc's well infact i got rid of all my pc's and use a laptop due to only ever doing the basics on the laptop like listed above.
With linux can i still use my external hard drives adn usb sticks?

Sorry for all the newb questions but i have never used or even seen linux before.

yeh of course you can. Are you installing linux on a laptop? As on increasingly rare occassions you may have to fiddle to get wireless working.

I installed fedora on my macbook the other day and had to do some terminal (like dos prompt) bashing to get a driver installed.

Having to do this is getting rarer as time goes by though

Linux has a lot of advantages over windows for more technical use. But there are some things done very badly in certain distros or GNU/Linux as a whole.

You will almost certainly dislike linux after your first dip, but if you stick with it and get on the learning curve, you will soon pick up the skills you need to use it.

Linux is great try it out on virtual box first though.

I suggest going for ubuntu first though that is very user friendly

Yeah its going to be on my laptop
Just looking at maybe trying something that does'nt use as much resources as windows

There is so much to learn so get installing and learning

I'd try ubuntu and dual boot with xp, that's the way i've got it currently setup. As said further up, i still find it easier to do certain things in xp than ubuntu.

edit: mint is very nice as well
