looking to get a DSLR at some point soon, prob just after xmas in the sales. thinking of spending about £300, for that i need the cam, lense, mem card and case. tripod would prob come a few months afterwards i rekon.
Not sure which to go for, looking for a simple starter cam with about 10m pixels easy to use but good quality pics at the same time.
Any recommendations would be very helpful.

the d80 looks a bit too pricey, the d60 looks closer to what i can afford.
would you go for that or the canon 400D, 450D mite cost 2 much as well altho id have to see what the price woz in the sale

If you're willing to put a bit more, I'd recommend the 450D, got one myself, and it's very impressive. I always wanted a 350D, getting a bit old now, but it's still does some mighty fine stuff.

i might try save for the 450D then, hopefully the price will drop enuff, my birthday is in jan too so maybe a few bob in my pocket there, cheers for the help guys

I just picked up a used 400D with a tripod, 2gig CF card, 500 actuations for £250!
Very pleased and it was a steal at the price...cheers Tom!
Anyway, used will always be better value, but buying new means you could get more if/when you decide to move on. Choice is yours :)

However, I would go and try some bodies out, I got a 400D as it suits my small hands, if your hands are large then a Nikon may feel better. Sony's are also getting good reviews for low prices, and don't discount Pentax/Olympus etc. Even Samsung do some decent kit, with a nice warranty (2 years afaik). If you get a chance to try them out first, take it, it will help you may a better choice in the long run, plus don't always be fooled by the megapixel mania - bigger is not always better!!!! Lol

have you thought about going second hand?

get a much better spec for the price...

i thought about that but wouldnt wana buy from a well known auction site cos u dont kno what you're getting. where else would u look, the local papers?

as for 3dcandy, i know megapixels isnt the basis of a beta camera, ive been trying to read some magazines on the subject and got one or two review mags but its hard to choose so thought id ask ppl with personal experience.

after lookin at another website the 350D doesnt seem 2 be stocked and the 1000D seems to be its replacement, which is beta though

cheers for the help u guys, keep it comin

Most dedicated Camera Shops (have a loo around your town centre) have a 'Second Hand' section... you also get a warranty (usually 3 months) from these places too!!...

Thats what I'm gonna do!...

On a point mentioned above!... How do you find out the 'Actuations' on Canon gear???...

there are other sites that are photography based and have second hand for sale sections.

even ocuk has some come up on MM from time to time.

even the bay would be ok if you find someone with good feedback..

1000D is ok, I prefered to get a 400D though as it takes more shots quicker (better buffer/ larger buffer) and I wanted to stick with CF cards. As said above, most decent camera shops have a s/hand section, can't name them due to competitors rules, but I'm sure a quick google will throw up some that will be nearby.

Actuations will be found by the photo number as long as that setting hasn't been reset. It pops up in the filename, and also if you take a picture and then review it it is shown then too :)

Avoid the D60 and D40, look at other threads to see why. The 400D or 450D is a good starter choice, but they are really uncomfortable if you have medium or big hands.
