Taking my first steps into setting up mail and ftp servers for personal education.

Have a static ip and a have purchased a domain name with fasthosts. Am I right in thinking that it's possible host a website on fasthosts servers but have ftp.mydomain.co.uk on an internal pc behind my static ip address without much jiggery pockery?

Or do all subdomains have to reside on the fashosts server without chaning the 'A record' to have the whole domain pointing at my static ip address?

If I understand the question correctly, you can have a separate A record for each subdomain.

You can do what you are suggesting provided fasthosts let you amend your DNS records.

From the control panel, it seems that only one A record is available to be changed.

On a sidenote, when I type my external ip address into my browser, i get my router login screen. Externally, however this does not happen. Is it possible to tweak my settings so that I 'see' what proper external users 'see'?

Thanks

It's a Netgear DG834G and from what i've read, does not support loopback. Any other ideas? Currently messaging test instructions to a friend, I think he's getting tired of "try accessing my ftp server" messages!

Put an entry in your hosts file to point your domain at the internal IP. Other than that, you're stuck.

If it doesn't support NAT Loopback/NAT Reflection, the only other option would be to either run your own DNS/use hosts file/use another name on your proper DNS config to point to the local IP.
