I'm making a newbuild for my nephew and want some advice on component selection. Is there anything you would change? This is for a 12 year old.

Core i3-7100 3.90GHz (Kaby Lake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - Retail
Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit
GA-Z270P-D3 Intel Z270 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
Vault Midi Tower Gaming Case - Black/Green LED
24x DVD±RW DRW-24D5MT SATA ReWriter - Black (OEM)

Components I already have:

RX470 GPU
60GB SSD
1TB HD
Keyboard & Mouse
Corsair 650W power supply
Windows 10

I only had a quick look at the CPU, memory and motherboard and couldn't find anything better for the price so it seems like a good build.

Make your nephew build it!

Could save on the processor and get the G4560 instead?

would the PC be for gaming? if so what ress would it be at and what games?

1080p and very basic gaming like Terraria and Torchlight i.e not anything too taxing. Some LEGO games too.

Ok I have updated my list tell me what you think of it now?:

Intel Pentium G4560 Kaby Lake
Prime B250M-A Intel B250 (Socket 1151) DDR4 Micro ATX Motherboard
Elite 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C16 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit

Everything else is the same

EDIT: Probably worth going for a Micro ATX case rather than a full ATX one?

Your second build would certainly fulfil your nephews present gaming needs but given his age he's right on the cusp of finding and perhaps being allowed to play more demanding games?

Although your first build would technically be overkill, for now, it would at least take him into the next level of gaming if he's closer to 13 etc...

I've been there before with my own son - I erred on the side of caution and spent more on a more powerful system and it saved me money in the long run (still is as I can pass on my old components).

The flip side is my son also has friends who love indie pixel games - they look like a zx spectrum could run them - and their parents wasted pots of money on monolith machines for paltry gaming experience.

Difficult choice - does your nephew yearn to play FPS games?
