Hi. This is my first post on here and im desperately hoping someone can help me out and put me on my way to my first succesfull overclock.

My system is as follows,

Asus Striker 2 Formula 780i
Intel QX6700
4gb Corsair Dominator pc-8500 DDR2
1TB Western Digital Hard Drive
Freezer 7 Pro Cooling
Vista 64 bit
750 Watt PSU
2 x 8800 GTX

Now you can overclock in my bios using ai overclock and my computer will run at 2.8ghz stable however ive been reading loads of post on various forums saying that my cpu will do 3.2ghz no problems although it will run a little warm, however after teeaking a few settings on my pc I believe I have achieved this as on system properties on vista it lists the following

Intel Quad Core @ 2.66ghz 3.20 Ghz

does this mean im running 3.2ghz?? As when I load and use cpuz im getting a reading much lower than this I think. Like I said im new to all this and some help would be greatly appreciated:D

Well done :)

You have indeed overclocked your Quad to 3.2Ghz. The reason why CPU-Z shows a lower speed is due to Speedtep enabled in the bios. When enabled and if the system is idle, the motherboard will drop the multiplier on your Quad in order to save power and in turn slowing the speed. It makes absolutely no difference in the real world to performance as when you run anything intensive, the motherboard will ramp up the multiplier and your Quad will be at full speed.

Hope that helps and well done on your first overclock :)

good work

nvidia chipsets have a nasty habit of not playing ball when paired with 65nm chips so for your first overclock that is a real result!

why not look at joining our hardware bot team and benching your hardware when its running at its higher speed?
link in my sig :)

Thanks for the link, and cheers for the message. im really interested to see what my machine can or indeed cant do so i will have a bash and let you know how i get on. cheers again
