Hello all

I'm going to Newcastle tomorrow to visit a friend but haven't really planned what we're going to do when i'm there... My friend doesn't really know much about Newcastle because she only just moved there recently from down South, so we're both tourists basically :p

Can anyone recommend me any places to go to or things to do in Newcastle? I'll be staying in South Gosforth, so feel free to spec me an itinerary with South Gosforth being the starting point  I'll only be there from Sat noon to Sun early afternoon, so want to see/do as much as I possibly can.

I'll be leaving around 6am tomorrow, meaning I have to wake up at 4am.. so I don't have much time to do any research as I still need to pack my bag and shower and sleep... so would really appreciate some quick recommendations please! Thanks :D

get the metro or drive to eldon square/city centre and just wander around like tourists , can walk from there to everywhere really , nice shops in the centre and nice food/bars on the quayside

edit - not sure if they have a home game tomorrow but that could affect things

Go down to the banks of the Tyne and listen to the haunting sound of the geordie whale song (youtube it)
I just youtubed it and didn't understand a single word, whereas all the people commenting on the vid said it's exactly how geordies speak... I think i'll really struggle to understand people when I'm up there :o

Town centre, have a wonder, go to Eldon Square shopping centre. After that, head towards the Quayside (ask a friendly Geordie to point you in the direction). You might notice that one of the roads across 'dips' slightly. Its a crossroad so go down the road where the other road is dipped and you'll end up (eventually) on a steep road down to the quayside http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Dean+Street,+Newcastle+Upon+Tyne,+United+Kingdom&aq=0&sll=54.970649,-1.608896&sspn=0.003042,0.009645&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Dean+St,+Newcastle+Upon+Tyne,+Tyne+And+Wear+NE1,+United+Kingdom&ll=54.970865,-1.610527&spn=0.012169,0.038581&z=15&layer=c&cbll=54.970777,-1.610395&panoid=xDhllXOAaZQdm97XrnBnfQ&cbp=12,161.56,,0,14.61 which is cobbled further down. You will end up under the Tyne Bridge. Have a breather next to the scenic view of the water! :)

You'll spot the millennium bridge. Cross it, and you're in a different city :). Next to it you'll see an old building called 'Baltic Flour Mill'. It's a free Museum which is always deffo worth having a peek and has a viewing box on the top floor.

Once you've done that, go to the building that looks like a stuffed sock. Its just a cool theater really, nothing much to see, but its an epic design.

If you want a good restraunt, Uno's on the street I've already given a link for, is a great place. There are also some other interesting restaurants down there :)

Bring a coat, mind, it's raining right now :(

Want to know about where to go on a night out? :O You really, really need to experience it. IMHO by far the best nightlife in the UK (and yes, I used to live in London) :)

Thanks for the suggestions! I've taken note of them ready for tomorrow :) Well, today actually... which reminds me, I best get some sleep ready for my 5 hour drive in the morning

Are there any nice trendy bars around? I'm not a clubbing person, so no need to bother with the night club suggestions :p

stick to the quayside and youl be fine , or in the town towards and past the station/life centre

just stay away from 'bigg market' at any cost ! its nice of them to keep all the chavy bars, clubs and people in that one area though :p

I'll echo what everyone else has said, go for Eldon Square then for a wander down to the quayside, it is great. Or you could always go to the metro centre if you wanna shop, but its not all that good in my experience!

It will be busy though, home game vs Tottenham :p

Stuffed sock? Never heard it called that. Giant condom and metallic slug yes, sock no :p

get your selfs down to IDOLS bar!

Why? Why would you do that :p

Sinners!

idols fool my stepson works there ! he knows everyone in town , hes in the strip club a lot diamonds? or something cos he knows 2 of the girls that work there

Remember, the way to fit in is to wear a belt for a skirt and a handkerchief for a top. Weather conditions are unimportant to the dress code.

Good luck!

You'll be fine. Catch a metro into town, walk around a bit (it's not that big a city centre) and look for bored-looking people in blue jackets with NE1 written on them - they exist purely to tell you where you can go and what you can do. There's usually a good few of them around the Monument (tall thin pillar in the middle of town) or on Northumberland Street, the main shopping area. Alternatively, there is a big information centre in the Central Arcade.

If you see a tall blonde guy walking into or out of Toni & Guy Opticians this afternoon, wave and say hello :D

I recommend getting a metro in from Gosforth if you're going into the city centre. Due to the match today parking will be absolutely horrendous. :o

For a night out just stick to the quayside/The Gate and keep away from all the chavs at the Bigg Market and you'll have a good night out :)

I'll look out for the blue people! I thought Toni & Guy are hairdressers?

Looks like I chose the wrong day to go to Newcastle :o anyone know what time the game is on and finish?

No, they have an opticians up here as well. Ugg Boots mean you won't stand out, don't worry :D

Match kicks off at 3 - it just means that you'll see a lot of people in black and white from 2-3 and from 5-6. It also means that the streets will be busier up towards the top end of town after the match ends. It isn't going to make your day intolerable or anything - they're a fairly friendly lot anyway :)
