Newcastle Upon Tyne Pubs

Cosy Joes FTW! :D
I love the Black Garter! Cosy Joe's, The Beehive, The Clock.....I miss Newcastle.

Karaoke really isn't my scene, but good lord the experience I had of it in The Black Garter was incredible for all the wrong reasons. Nipped in with some mates while passing by as I needed to take a wee, felt obliged to at least order a pint rather than immediately dip out after using their services for free. I think it was early on a Thursday evening, not a single person in that bar was remotely sober and the state of the people getting up on stage defied belief.

Harmless types don't get me wrong, not a bad place for a drink tbh.

Goose wasn't too bad, I think it's closed or relocated now? There was an Irish bar not far from Central Station I'd often pop into, but that closed years ago and I forget the name, they used to do a cracking wild boar burger and some traditional Irish meals like stews etc.

It closed down but called The Magpie now. Looks pretty similar.

Might pop in next I'm around, it was super convenient with being over the road from the Haymarket bus station. Would often jump on the bus to Seahouses etc for the odd weekend when I didn't want to deal with the car, wasn't a bad spot to wait around before/after a trip to unwind. Never had any trouble there of an evening either, which when I was still into bar hopping was semi-rare.

The Irish one you mentioned I think was O’Neill’s. That’s closed too, now the Victoria Comet.

That's the one! I wasn't sure if it was O'Neill's or O'Keef's. Really liked that place, similar reasons for Goose tbh given its proximity to the train station. Was always a good night, could get a little rowdy at times but nothing particularly bad.

Sad to see it go.

Centurion is still there or The Forth for a similar vibe. The Town Wall is decent too.

I've been to The Town Wall a few times, lovely bar.

Is the Jazz Cafe on Pink Lane still around?

You could have some absolutely amazing nights there with the live music.

Not exactly. I think the old guy who ran it passed away. It’s now called Prohibition but they do have Jazz bands on and stuff like that.

That's a shame, such a good atmosphere in that place. Glad to hear they're still doing that sort of thing though, hell of a legacy.

There was a bar over from the (at the time) Carling Academy that I spent a lot of time in too, but I cannot for the life of me remember the name of it. I was a pretty frequent concert goer in my 20's and I'd often pop in rather than stand around in a queue, generally wasn't fussed about potentially missing a song or two from an opening band.

Is The Barking Dogs still around? I believe the guy who ran the Broken Doll bought it for his wife. Was somewhere in the vicinity of Club Africa

You present yourself as a country girl but went on the drink in Wallsend as a Uni student? It's a working mens club too so I'd love to hear the story of how you got through the door, requirements aren't too heavy in most clubs now but certainly were back when you were visiting.

I'm frankly surprised you're still living and breathing.
