Hi guys,

My mum's birthday in a few days and I'm giving her a pc, our modem only has one ethernet connection so bought a cheap ethernet switch, 30 5 star reviews 3 1 star reviews, typically it's only letting one computer connect to the internet; the other just says limited or no connectivity. Just wondering if there's something I haven't done or something I need to do to sort it, both pc's have just been formatted, no fire walls or anything like that.

Thanks for the help,

J.C.

According to http://www.gyre.co.uk/help/broadband/connection_sharing.php I thought it was possible to just use the switch?

For three or more computers

When more than one other computer needs to share the connection with Computer #1 then you need to use a switch (or hub) (Figure 2). This time the computers are all connected to the switch using standard Ethernet cable.

If this isn't the case then could you suggest a cheap router that could do the job?

You can use a switch, however you need to set up Internet Connection Sharing and set static IP addresses and point the DNS and Gateway to the 'host' computer. You also need to leave that computer switched on to get access to the web from the others.

It is a lot easier to buy a router, which will do all the above for you and not require a computer to be left on :)

Cable at the minute, gave Virgin a ring earlier to ask about upgrading to a router, they're charging £40 for a router that's £30 on Amazon, haven't really been able to find any cheaper than that.
