Hi I have an array of Samsung drives spread across 4 SATA ports. The moment I installed the most recent, one of my existing drives became invisible, and new drive (presumably unformatted) is not appearing either in the 'my computer' directory.

Spinpoint 500GB - 3 partitions (inc OS)
Spinpoint 160GB - 3 partitions

Spinpoint 160GB - 1 Partition - no longer visible
Spinpoint 80GB (newly installed drive) - not visible

Any ideas?

Go to device manager - you can format and initialise the new one and probably reinitialise the other there. In so doing they will be assigned a drive letter and appear for you in the 'my computer' directory. :)

Thanks for the speedy reply. In device manager I can see 3 of the 4 physical drives present. The new 80GB is there but not the single partitioned 160GB (see above).

how would i go about initialising/formatting in device manager?

does it matter in which sequence the drives are plugged into the mobo?

If you go to computer mananger and then go to disk manager, you should be able to see them all and format from there.

If you cant, check you BIOS to see if all the drives are present. If they are not its probably a connection problem.

ah yes. or run compmgmt.msc

Ok initialised the new 80GB drive, created a primary partition, which i am now formatting.

Disk management does not however see Spinpoint 160GB (1 Partition) :(
