How long should it be left until paint can be applied. The work was done over the weekend of 5/6 April

Well, my Step-Dad and Grandad are Plasterers, and they let it dry out for 2 to three days before painting. But I'd give it a white wash first, so the main paint coat won't peel and crack.

if its dryed(gone pale) it will be fine by now mate
the older type plasters used to need a fortnight+

the cheap way to do it is water down some emulsion paint (about 10% water)
if you used just water all you are doing is wetting it ,the idea is to make the surface less absorbent so you need less of your top coat and save cash

leave it for a few days proberly 2-3, just because its gone pale doesnt mean its dried out all the way through completely! I use to do some building work and the amount of people that would paint over the plaster asap and it ruined it was astounding.

It was PVA'd before they plastered.
That was to help the plaster stick better to the ceiling and to stop it drying out too quickly while the plasterers are working with the plaster
As said water down some emulsion and apply a coat of this first before applying straight emulsion

I used 50/50 white emulsion/water when i had my room plastered, i was worried PVA would leave streaks under the final paint :)

use a sanding board with a fine grain paper and give it a rub down, hoover the walls to get rid of the dust.

brush with a 50:50 PVA/Water solution and then allow to dry and then paint with paint of choice. this used to be my job when I was labouring for a local builders.

Suppose to have someone doing it for me, but got the problem at the moment where the other half doesn't like him and she wants to do it.. FGS!

Uncle just plastered our ceiling last saturday... painted it on wednesday.

just gave it about 3 coats of emulsion, but for the walls i whitewashed them with emulsion too to seal the plaster before doing topcoats.
