Does anyone know of any good news content for websites that will let me access news articles from a mysql database?

e.g. news articles stored on database which the web page then pulls from when the user clicks on the story.

Are you talking about a site that you would be in control of or an external site?

If you just need a self publishing platform that you can stick your articles into a database and pull them back out onto a webpage then wordpress or textpattern would do the job.

If its the latter then I wouldn't expect so.

yep a website that I'm in control of.

Basically I have a news page. Obviously putting news articles on the page, the page would build up to such a depth you would be scrolling forever and a day.

My theory is that I can put blurbs to the story and then when you click 'more' about the story, it pulls it from the database.

A mate of mine done it on one for me before but that was asp and MSAccess and had an admin backend for entering the content with WYSIWYG editor.

I want the same backend but using PHP and MYSQL

Well you could either install a blogging platform such as wordpress or textpattern, but I feel that that may be too bulky and bloated for what you neeed.

You could try and create your own, its realatively easy once you grasp a hold of PHP - there are plenty of tutorials out there. Here's one I showed a friend a while back, they said it was pretty straight forward and picked it up in a few days.

Otherwise I suppose you could just Google for free scripts. There are plenty out there (hotscripts and the like) but I wouldn't reccomend them, most will do your head in.

cheers guys. Just trying a free script at the mo called EBANews, not sure what it's like. Do Wordpress and Textpattern work with the articles in a database though? As far as teaching myself PHP, don't think I could go that far in creating something so that I can add something to a database and then pull it back again.

Will try the others on Monday probably when I get back into work and thanks for your advice

I love Textpattern and I find it immensley easy but I know others have had difficulties. I feel that they would be too bloated for what you want as these platforms are really designed for a whole site.

Give it a spin, if you have xfire I will be more than happy to answer/give help with Textpattern.

ok, just installed Wordpress, just trying to work out how to embed this into my site.

I'm assuming that I edit the theme files in Wordpress to replicate my existing website themes, and then somehow incorporate the pages into my website.

Therefore when you click news on my menu, it takes you to the wordpress page

kind of, I think you need to look at it the other way round, maby treat wordpress as your main site now and import your existing pages into wordpress.
Takes a bit of efort to begin with working out how wordpress actually manages things, but once you work it out your should be able to customise everything to how you want it to look so in the end you won't be able to tell your in wordpress .

unless you want to just use wordpress as a seperate blog part of your site then it might be better to link to it as your suggested
