I'm a tad new to this area, so...

I appreciate that sites that can be subscribed to, to get updates.

But is there a way to be alerted to updates in sites content where there isn't an official subscription.

Mail does this for you, you can subscribe to RSS feeds and once Mail.app is open, it will show you that there are unread messages within those feeds

But what about content from a site that doesn't offer feeds. Is there still a way of being alerted to its updated content?

Just the job, but sadly only a 5day trial. Freebie would be better!
