newsgroup files help

Hi All I,m trying to work out what all these files are in newsgroups ? i thought that when you click on a nzb file it downloads like a torrent , but i get loads of rar files can anyone help ? :confused:
 
There are sites on the net that have 'how to' guides for newbies to usenet. Might be worth you checking them out, I'm not sure if can post links or what.

jamjar, you're asking very basic questions in multiple threads, and it might be worthwhile doing a bit of googling on your own behalf rather than expecting to be spoonfed every step of the way. You can always post back here if you run into genuine difficulties that you're unable to resolve by yourself.

As long as it's not explicitly a guide to "how to go about blagging copyrighted stuff" I can't see the harm... :)

The guides here on these forums are quite good. Some of the older ones have already been removed due to the talk of piracy, but the latest usenet thread is still going strong and has lots of useful info, from talk about different providers and their cost/quality, the software used both to search newsgroup and to download/repair/unpack and to any special deals that different providers may have.
 
I've been using winrar as trial for years. It doesn't cost.

I've found 7zip to be better at compressing certain files types whilst winrar is better at others.

Seriously 7-zip is the best compression/decompression tool you can use. Sometime when you ask questions you need to trust the answers given.

I like 7-zip and use it myself, but I can't see any justification for a blanket statement that it's "better" than WinRAR, apart from the price of course.

It might ultimately compress certain types of data (not all) better using its native format at the highest settings, but I've always found it a fair bit slower than WinRAR to achieve a similar archive size. Most people will only ever use the shell extension to right-click > extract anyway.

SABnzbd will do the lot for you and you won't need to think about much once you've got it setup. Sounds like the sort of thing you need if your unsure of unraring/unzipping files you've downloaded.

this is true i,ve also found out that if you use newsleacher in the repair/extract part there is a box to tick that does it all for you and when the download is complete there is a separate folder with the film etc ready to play :) so you won,t need winrar :)

I used to use WinRAR, but now I just use 7zip as I've found it quicker to use and has resulted in a bit better compression on the stuff I tested it on than WinRAR.
