Newsgroups usage up 42%

All the industry is interested in is making money. It doesn't care how. It doesn't realise that there are people out there who download something, really enjoy it, then buy it. People like Lilly Allen doing the stupid campaign to stop piracy grinds my gears as, to me, it seems they are getting very greedy. They don't get the concept that many people who've bought her songs and items listened illegally first. The thing with downloading is that people will continually do it unless there is a genuine reason to buy it. So great online play, a great album or great game will still sell.

Whilst with torrents you can view IP's everyone knows that the larger sites add random IP's into the trackers. It's like when that muppet bunch of lawyers tried to take an elderly couple to court - they hadn't any clue what a torrent was.

Well astraweb has a $11 pcm fixed sub, sounds reasonable

indeed! i'm trying out the $10 25GB "trial" now (i call it a trial because there's no repeat billing).

files aren't as easy to find as on torrent, but they do download much faster.

sabnzbd+ - because it requires you to do nothing once setup correctly.

What a great bit of software! I've been using newsleecher for the past 3 years or so, and it's crying out for a web interface. This is so set and forget, the Newzbin integration is superb. Cheers for the recommendation.

It's what i use. I'm not a heavy enough user to warrant a subscription, and the pay as you go prices are very reasonable.

The great thing about newsgroups is that in general punters have to hand over somebody's credit card details. One day that particular feature is going to turn round and bite that somebody ;)

+1

threads like this will make it mainstream sooner rather than later :(

haha yes, it has been used since before napster for file sharing. People just didnt pass the word around like the do with torrent sites.
Personally i was more of an irc bot user with access to private channels and what not. 2 years ago i moved to newsgroups and ive never had a problem acquiring something, apart from really really old files which the newsgroups seem to be addressing by upping their binary retention.
If they do manage to get any kind of hold over newsgroups the distribution will just move to another digital medium.

Lets see we had:

ICQ file sharing
BBS
FTP
DC++
Newsgroups
IRC
Torrents
P2P : kazaa, napster, emule yadaa yadda
Those old dial up servers
Website dumps like Rapidshare etc

Unless they create a solution themselves the problem wont go away, ever.

This has been around for a while now but you can use google as a file search engine, most of the servers hosting said files are located in russia and are usually dumps. It basically brings up public access ftps etc

That's like saying somebody must use a credit card to pay for their ISP. Paying for USENET access does not equate to doing anything illegal and seeing as the data is encypted they cannot know what you are downloading.

Possibly so. However, personally I would feel somewhat uneasy about handing my credit card details to someone in lawless Russia - just personal preference ;)

Looks interesting - i'll try that later on.

Alt.Binz - does everything you need and its free.

I've been using news file grabber for the last couple of years, it does the job but it's not free.

What a silly thing to say (surprise surprise :o), I bet you'd have no problem handing your card over to a petrol pump attendant where fraud is much more likely. I've never heard of people having their card details stolen by a large usenet provider - have you? Even if they were you get card insurance anyway.

i've been using newsgroups for years, paying for a monthly/yearly access to the newsgroups via a premium newsgroup provider that was until this year i discovered my own isp has everthing i required. So now everything is free, and still find everything that might be of interest.

I'm looking at this now - but how do i browse within newsgroups?

I've clicked on the newsgroups tab and got the list, i can select what i want but i can't work out how to get ia list of newsgrpoups from within.
