Does anybody use these? A work friend gave me a link at work for usenet.com I think but having checked it at home it looks tottally different. Im new to all this Newsgroup thing and wondered if anyone was willing to help? Im looking for a good newsgroup.

msn : [email protected]

please add me if you dont want to post here.

All I know about newsgroups is that u use outlook express to access them. Your isp should have info how to use their newsgroups but for a decent one with file retention, u need to pay for it; so thats where I lose interest.

newsgroups are great, better than torrents which cripple ISP networks, and who wants to share stuff when you can leech to your hearts content.

Thundernews are good and they accept paypal. They are a giganews reseller who are generally considered to be the best on the internet

Shame really, Usenet used to be purely about discussion forums, now if you mention Usenet people assume you are using it to download illegal files :(

Binary groups are more harm than good for Usenet, IMHO.

chesterstu can you get the usual things from thundernews ? Do they max your connection ? Im on 20mb really after games. I know this is illegal but I buy every game I like. I just dont want to spend £30ish for 20mins gameplay.

Most ISP's have plenty of upload to spare. Usenet would typically do more damage to the ISP as you download at full whack all the time, where as public torrents are often slower. At OiNK it was more of a shock to see a torrent that didn't max my connection (I miss it. :( )

At my last house i had virgin media 20Mb and cold max it out. Have a look at there website there is loads of different plans with different numers of connections.

Giganews + Newsleecher > all.

I can always max out my 20mb connection.

Binary groups aren't just used for illegal files. They are very usefull for completely legal files, like Linux distros and game demos. For example, I downloaded the Crysis demo from usenet, at full speed of my 20mb line without having to wait in 'download queues', or rely on slow and unreliable torrents.

I do accept what you are saying, but usenet binaries do come in very handy for legit uses too.

The other thing about newsgroups is that I couldn't "decode" anything back into a single file. Downloaded stuff to do it, read FAQs, still didnt work for me.

It's Giganews and Newsleecher for me, too. If you've never subscribed to Giganews before you can and "rent" a copy of Newleecher for about £2 a month.

I use it to download HD transport streams. Just figured out how to play BBC HD streams on the PS3. Nothing like a good bit of Robin Hood or Michael Palin in 1080i goodness!

Giganews is the best one and will max out a Virgin Media connection. It also has the best retention.

The thing is, NNTP isn't really designed for binary distribution. It would be better if more ISPs ran FTP servers for the downloading of legit files (e.g. Blueyonder gamefiles FTP). As a protocol FTP is more efficient.

Personally I haven't used Usenet for discussion for around 9 years now. Modern forum software works fine although I suppose there is an argument to suggest that newsgroups let you reach a slightly more diverse audience.

Yea, unless its 4pm+ then you get capped down to 5mbit for 4 hours for going over the rather stupidly low 3gb limit

That, and VM are now starting to shape newsgroup ports.
