Hi all, after years of not bothering I've just decided to start looking at newsgroups again. I've set up thunderbird to read my newsgroups but it's pants tbh, so can anyone help point me in the right direction. just using the BT newsgroups for now...

I think you really need to pay to get anything out of binary newsgroups. Free hosts just don't have the retention and randomly don't pick up posts, which is annoying when you're downloading 20-part files and one part is always missing.

Unzbin & GrabIt are both free and decent. SSL doesn't work that well in GrabIt but doubt you get that with BT anyway.

I did know that it was Giganews, been years (about 10!) since I last looked at them and they've changed soooo much!

google groups is pretty good :)

Newsleecher plus Supersearch and I hate to say this but /end thread.

I have used every method over the years and was part of the Newzbin team for some time but I tried the above combo last year and it is awesome.

Google "free IPv6 news servers". You'll find some good stuff ;)

Indeed, I'm amazed people pay for newsgroup access when you can access newsgroups for free if you know what you're doing... ;)

That said, I don't really bother with newsgroups now... My hard drive is full as it is and I have more than enough Linux distros for now... :p

People pay because they want the long retention only a pay for account gives. These free ones go back 120~ days and even less for most ISP provided ones.

I'd rather keep my Astraweb.

£7 for 900+ days retention is peanuts and gives more freedom. And SSL.
