My present build is 5 years old and going strong - Asus p5k-3e mobo, E8400 dual(overclocked to 4.2MHz, nvidia GEForce 8600, ddr2 ram, OCZ ssd, Samsung hdd etc.
It is probably wise to look now at a replacement rather than wait for something to go.
I'm inclined to build a smaller-form system this time, using a Bitfenix prodigy case.
I can carry forward my ssd, hdd, dvd writer, display, keyboard and mouse for a period at any rate. So I will need a mobo, processor, ram, graphics card, psu and cpu cooler (preferably water cooler).
I want a high-performing system that I can overclock to 4.5. Very little gaming - I just want a fast and very responsive system.
On the 1155 socket I would have been thinking of perhaps i5 3570K, but I'm not sure of the implications now of Haswell. Is it too soon to buy Haswell? Is it too late to buy 1155 socket stuff? Haswell is reputed to run hotter?

I would appreciate advice on the build. My budget is approx. £650.
Thank you

Just to add to my post:
My inclination is to go with the latest - haswell - except I've read that
- it offers little improvement over its predecessor
- it runs hotter.
The other side of the argument is that 1155 is now on the way out.

To help decide I would appreciate a suggested list for both options.
I am looking for
- processor ((probably either i5 3670k or i5 4670k)
- 8gb ram
- mono with good over clocking, MBR compatibility, min 6 sata (3xsata6), min 8 USB (2xusb3), 1xesata, onboard WiFi an advantage but not essential
- good middle-of-range graphics card
- CPU cooler (water e.g such as h60 etc)

Budget for these app. £650-700

My current build was based on advice from this forum and worked out really well, so I'm hoping for a repeat this time round.
Thank you

Mickey Finn, Thank you for the reply.

Will this fit the Bitfenix Prodigy - my preferred choice - or is it an ATX spec?

Two other things
- I forgot to include a PSU on my list
- could you also suggest a basket based on socket 1155?

Thanks again

congrats on the new baby - the "lack of sleep" phase usually does not last too long and it will be soon forgotten.

Thank you for the data - let me take a little time to digest it.

thanks again
