bear in mind my stupidity on this as some things might not be obvious.

Drive quality is not much of an issue.

but are the 2001/2002 new shape mondeos ok? in terms of reliability etc?

i'm thinking a 1.8 5 door with power steering and a manual? the only thing i might do different is go for an estate.

are they good value?

The 1.8 is pretty bullet proof. 1.5/2k will get you a pre-facelift LX or Zetec, get the Zetec if you can. not much to look out really other than knocking on the suspension. Should be plenty around so be picky. I'd be slightly more included to get a 1.6 Focus at the money.

looking around at that price the facelift ones seem to be in that price. the older ones are a lot cheaper. think about £500 for a w reg.

I've only seen very high mileage facelift ones for 2k. I haven't seen a mk3 under a grand for a long while. 2k is pre facelift money. Bear in mind the facelift was in 2003 so you'll be lucky to get one worth buying.

oh right, the ones i saw on autotrader were 2002 ones. like this one.....
