Planning my next build and want a firm solid base, would be 900 series chipset as that it at the minute, i have narrowed things down to Asus Sabertooth 990FX or the Gigabyte 990FXA-UD7 AMD 990FX.

Dilema being when AMD do get the Bulldozer on general sale chances are MB manufactures are going to come along with another couple of options.

Say the BD get to the market Sept/Oct, I'm thinking give it 6 months and see if any new MB's come along more tailored specifically to these chips. Again when you study the 2 boards i have mentioned they both boast similar features but no great leaps in tech, both being great boards and if the UD5 is anything to go by then I will be keeping my eye on Gigabyte develops around 1st quarter of 2012.

Opinion would be appreciated, I have a GA-890GPA-UD3H, 8Gb DDR3, Radeon HD 5850 and a Phenom x4 975 running at a tame and stable 4.0Ghz. Plays everything fine but can stuggle sometime if im running multiple virtual machine 3 Servers 4-clients for example. Yes more ram would make a difference but im not spending until i build again

The build is going to be specifically aimed for the AMD BD, and i want 2 years out it, just looking for some opinions, and if anyone can inform me better.

Thanks

personal opinion would be that if you aim to make a build for a chipset that is not quite yet out then it maybe best to wait. As this will thenn allow you to get the proper technology that the chip was made for.

AMDs slow upgrade (as i call it) option seams better if you dont upgrade or build near as much and have litle less cash. this is where AMD seams to be most viable.

the chances are is that then BD is realeased shortly after (at maybe at simular time) the new boards will come out. with the full benerfits and support for BD

but thats my opinion. if you need a system now then your plan is pretty much solid. you can allways upgrade to the purposly designed stuff when you like/if you like.

also both boards are fine. personly would take the UD7 out of the 2 tho.

No i'm in no rush to build and would prefer to build around the new chip. Just wish they would push thing forward and get it on the market.

But again i think it will be April/May until the entire BD revolution finally stabilise's. I'm happy to wait and reseach/pick brains. Will be interesting to see how thing do eventually pan out. Then you'll have chinese whispers of Intel bringing things onto the horizon. I have I5 Vaio lappy but kinda stuck with AMD for desktop environment. I'll watch n wait, no doubt like countless others. Ultimatly i wont rush, no need. I can happily get by, just the anticipation keeps mounting :o

From all the news I keep seeing looks like the new CPU's might be out early Sept but will have to keep an eye out though... The UD7 is a good board from all the reviews I have seen.. There is a good group test on 990FX UD7 and Sabertooth in this months PC Format where the UD7 seems to have the edge...

From start to finish my time with the 990FXA-UD7 was miserable. I just wanted the experience to end but with all the problems, working with the board took far longer than it should have. It is without a doubt one of the worst motherboards I’ve ever worked with. I had more problems with this board during my review than any other before it and I’ve been doing this for some time now. I’ve certainly not seen any boards this bad in the last two years. Ordinarily I’d say that Gigabyte has some work to do and that the problems with the 990FXA-UD7 can be worked out but that would be a serious understatement. I’d recommend sending it back to the drawing board. It’s just that bad.

Sabertooth got a better review for sure, http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/06/07/asus_sabertooth_990fx_motherboard_review/ .

The Sabertooth 990FX seems to be another solid AMD board from ASUS, with a few exceptions that I will discuss later. The board design and layout are both pleasing to the eye and functionally impressive, with the board having an almost militaristic feel to it with the colors and layout scheme used. While the performance numbers were not much different from the previous generation AMD boards, there is something to be said with keeping performance as is. And I have a feeling that we will see some nice performance boosts once the next-gen AMD FX processors are released.

The only other minor complaint is the placement of the CMOS battery. Removing or replacing that battery will be a test of your patience with a larger video card in your system.

All in all, the Sabertooth 990FX is not a bad board at all and definitely one to keep an eye on.

My personal (and very strong) opinion is for you to wait. There's no point getting a current AM3+ board, as you already have a board that will run your 975.

Have a serious think about going to Intel. If I wasn't already on AMD I'd get a 2600K setup now. Easily clocked to 4.6ghz and 8 threads. Nothing touches it at the moment, BD isn't going to be out for a while yet, Ivy Bridge even longer.
