When are the next gen cards coming out. I feel like an upgrade with the release of the conroe..

I have a very high spec machine at the moment so Im a little aprehensive about shelling out, although I would just give my current machine to my son as his is getting a little old for the newer games.

I don't mind spending a couple of grand on a new PC, I just don't want the Geforce 8xx coming out to **** on my parade straight after me spending a small fortune on a new system..

no point in anyone releasing new cards until vista is out so soonest you will see the new cards in is early 2007. this way ati and nvidia also benefit in that they can milk the current series of cards for more cash for a while longer.

would be pointless for them to release next gen cards if vista is not arround to show them off.

They can still show them off with demos (maybe even in AVI/WMV format), just like ATI's 9700 did at its launch before DX9 was available.

They would be the fastest DX9 cards out and would win every benchmark.

Whoever released first (if they released 2-4 months before the competition), would get a significant lead in selling there graphics cards, as there are lots of people just sitting back there GPU purchase, to make sure the next one is DX10 compatible.

Great marketing - ATI/NVidia, the only DX10/Nextgen GPU available, then boast a load of features/videos to blow away the average consumer.

from what has been said about these cards so far, they may not even run dx9 games unless they are in a vista machine which will act as a software interpreter to convert dx9 code to dx10 for the cards to understand. not enough is known yet about all of this.

i for one will not be buying the first generation of dx10 cards. new unified shader architecture will have some drawbacks and bugs which should be rectified in the second generation of cards.

I'm prity sure that it is backwards compatible with DX9 games so it will run them under XP. However, I'm not getting one until the second wave of DX10 cards (if I even need one then)- an X1900XT will do me just fine until then.

Why not, the R600 is supposed to be the fastest DX9 card you can get.

odd your saying the r600 is the fastest dx9 card i can get? why can't i find it in the shops then??

also do you really believe it will be 64pipes as the specs show? ati just about managed 16 pipes so i doubt they will get much higher than 20 pipes on thier new card.

Can't see the point of buying a DX10 card until Vista arrives myself.

Sure, they will be good for your e-penis being the fastest DX9 cards, but you are also paying for all that DX10 tech that you can't use, and when you finally will be able to use it, the next gen of DX10 cards will either be out or very close.

Your not buying the first lot of DX10 cards for DX10, your buying them to have the fastest DX9 cards out there, but they have DX10 compatability, its called upgrading, do you not upgrade.

Yeah your paying for it, but why not, your going to be using it in January when DX10 is released, they aint just gona give cards away for free. :p

Thats a golden Question, regardless of what u buy we all know in 3-6 months time a better/faster card always arrives.....its quite possible ATIs R600 comes out with DX9/10 support and Nvidias G80 keeps up in the benchies but then its up to which card is the overall better design/feature set card.

Nvidia could release a DX10 card in Spring/Summer 07 but then ATI will release theres only accept there drivers/features are more mature...

Oh smeg it dont ever end

Remember Vistas been rumoured for an April 07 release date also... which is like 10 months away.

If its true then its very possible ATI would have released a card with many features that wont even go on/Guess this is the issue.... but it would still be there free in a sense.

I guess thats why ATI made that bold claim of having the fastest DX9 based card...

Regardless if G80 vs R600 is within 10-20fps appart the card with more features/better design gets my £ and thats regardless of vista release or not...

Dont MS usually end up releasing in August.

Buying a dx10 card now would be no worse then buying a conroe capable board before the cpu is released, still perfectly usable.

People even use older dx versions on newer cards for an advantage anyhow.

If you want to be totally sensible, dont buy anything till 2 years after its released, thats probably the best market area for price/performance

Ok so from what I can gather, wait till the release of Vista.

My system is top spec right now anyway. We all get itchy when we see several new items becoming available at once, I have an addiction to spending money on PC tech. I can't help it!!
