Hi i have an 8800GT and feeling the urge to splurge on new card but was wondering how long before the next round of cards will be released?

Get a 2nd hand 4850 if you want a new toy to play with till the new nvidia refresh comes out. Will be good value, and an upgrade.

Either that or wait :p

I was like that, but if you keep that mindset you'll never buy anything!

There are so many games out that i've put off playing, or that are due out before christmas, that I just went ahead and did it.

Bought a 4870X2 and haven't looked back. Only bad thing is that i'm playing Far Cry 2, Crysis, Fallout 3 and Red Alert 3 all at once which isnt the best way to go about it.

Buy something otherwise you'll just be waiting forever. You can always sell up and get something better - you've never struck me as the sort of bloke short on wonga! ;)

I'm not normally but I got what, absolutely ages out of the 8800 generation and am keen to repeat that. When I decided to purchase I then discovered that the refresh was 'next month' so it seemed daft.

I'm not bothered about buying a card and 4 months later something new comes out but a few weeks later is peeving.

I regret not buying a 280 in September, though. Mind you those were dark times on this forum to dare to mention Nvidia..

Its not as if the 8800GT is strugglign at games, i dont see why its a bad thing to wait the few months.

Im itching to build a whole new pc and with uni coming up next year september i thinks i may just have found an excuse as by then should be alll new things out too :D

ok i can wait till feb/march had this 8800gt a year so a few more months wont hurt I will just put of the new 24" screen until the new cards are out as i reckon that would be too much for that.

Still got my x1800xt, was gonna grab a second hand 8800GT as i used to have one for a week but sold it as i was short on cash.

The card flew from what i recall. Might just wait untill next year and do a big upgrade!

yaeh i was thinking next yeah will be better steppign nelhem or how ever it spelt, cheaper ddr3 and mobos for it and new cards at cheaper prices after being out some months.

Proably be looking at just over a grand for a good respec :p

How much of an increase was there going from a 8800GTX to a 9800GTX?.
The current 260/280 update is likely going to be along similar lines from all the current available info, which means a slightly faster clocked card, which in practical terms you'd be hard pushed to tell much if any differance between old and new

If you want long service from a card, then it's best to buy as early as possible into it's lifecycle, the best time to buy a 280 was undoubtedly the weeks around September, quite a few ppl did buy them then despite what was being said on these forums as a lot of ppl thought 200 odd quid for Nvidia's flagship card which was a decent performer, was a good deal.

With the current economic situation and the exchange rate, there not going to get significantly cheaper in the next few months.

If you get one now you will have a card that will give you a X months of good service, the same of course will be true in Feb, the X will just be a number 3 months lower than it is now

The only time you are going to see a big jump in performance over what is currently available is with the arrival of a new architecture, so i'd say wait for that or buy now and enjoy
