Next-Gen Consoles "Quantum Leap Forward"?

I think the current consoles are actually pretty good tbh. Look at games like uncharted on the PS3. Considering the hardware is essentially 7 years old it's a damn good looking game.

Consoles have come a long way and I feel bring more to the gamer than they take away. I doubt we would have half the games we have now if consoles did not exist. They bring gaming to the masses and they do it quite well.

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox is apparently dealing with chip production yield issues.

ZoomThere is not much substantiated information that would put the Xbox into the definite space of delay, but some bits published by SemiAccurate, suggest that Microsoft is currently dealing with the usual pre-production annoyances and is scrambling to get the processor of the console into reliable manufacturing.

SemiAccurate's Charlie Demerjian believes that a finalized chip will have to be put into production by November 1 in order to be able to qualify it for mass production this year. In order to secure the rumored September 2013 launch date, Microsoft and its partners will have to figure out their yield problems by February 2013 to be able to finalize the console.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Isn't the 720 meant to be using a mid range 6670 type of video chip? I can understand why you might have issues on the more complex high chips but AMD have been banging these PC budget monsters out for over a year and half now.

I don't get it, I thought they were talking about reliable processor yields? Or have I missed the point?

And the reason they won't release new IP's and work on old engines is because of the fact that the consoles we're using are outdated.
Publishers aren't going to release new IP's when they know new consoles will be out in a year or 2. They'll wait til they come out so they can say "look at our lovely new game with super shiny new graphics."

I disagree with that.

It's the Publishers which have all the power, not the Developers, there are very few these days who Develop and Publish themselves.

It's got nothing at all to do with console power or graphics that stop new IPs, its all about Cost, Profit and Risk. Publishers want a safe return for their money, one which creates as maximum profit as possible, especially given that the games industry is finally starting to see a downward trend. Thus they don't want to take a risk with new IPs because its an unknown and could lose them money. The games industry has become quite a well oiled machine in that respect now.

When new consoles do finally launch, they will need the power of existing big IP series to get them to start selling, it won't be entirely new IPs that will sell consoles.

This puts doubt to all the recent rumours saying they are going to ditch custom made chips in favour of off the shelf "standard" hardware already available, poor yields are common in new, advanced designs and can take a while for the process to mature, i hope this doesn't delay it too much but rather that than a rushed, flawed system

Was thinking a similar thing watching my mate playing The Witcher 2 on his 360. Looked pretty damn good considering.

One reason I prefer the PC is its ability to play the old stuff as well as the latest releases. I hope they don't overlook the backward compatibility factor in the new consoles

I think the only quantum leaps we'll see will be in expectations and hype.

Looking at the development hardware and seeing year and years old pc specs in 'next gen' consoles isn't thrilling.

Games will still be games, the good ones will still take plenty of development time and generally be from developers not struggling with publishers.

Same old etc.

People are expecting too much of a leap with next generation consoles when there wont be. The graphics wont be ground braking like it was 18 years ago when coming from 2D with the Megadrive and SNES to 3D with PS1, Saturn and N64.

Next generation consoles won’t bring anything to the market we haven’t seen before. Especially with graphics as they will be based on already available graphic components.

I'm expecting quite a disappointing leap tbh. If the next consoles are 1080p (or at least 720p) native, which they really should be, that alone will eat up a large chunk of the horsepower.

The one hope is that history has shown devs can get far more mileage out of the fixed target that is consoles compared to pc's. Brute forcing it through tech just isn't going to happen, costs would be too high.
